While this book is, for the most part, quite fascinating, it has too many flaws for me to give it a higher rating. I appreciated the effort to make all of the stories seem like actual historical data, but occasionally I found myself bored by the sheer amount of information the author threw at me. Like, I get it. You want to make Dracula believable. Let's move on. I also would have liked the story to concentrate more on the girl (who, incidentally, is never named) and Barley... even though all of the nesting stories were very interesting, there were several bits that could have been cut in order to focus on other things. Finally, the end. The ending is such a letdown - there is so much build-up for a climax that lasts for about 10 pages, and then the whole thing is wrapped up in a very trite manner. There is both too much resolution and not enough resolution, if that makes sense. It sounds like I hated this book, which is not true. I just had some issues with it. I did enjoy reading it, and there were several passages that made me legitimately scared (admittedly, this is not difficult to do). But I wish that Kostova had written the ending differently, as I was distinctly disappointed when I finished the book, whereas I loved everything before the climax and ending.

I read The Golden Compass in an effort to get in touch with my students last year. It turned out that The Golden Compass was too advanced for most of my fourth and fifth graders, though I have recommended it to a couple of advanced readers who have loved it. I like the rebellious subtext.

Obra cumbre, libro de viajes y reflexión acerca del cambio. Trufado de haikus de gran altura poética. Breve, intenso... Maravilloso.

Also excellent, but I preferred Angle of Repose. People seem to prefer their first Stegner read, though Angle of Repose did win the Pulitzer.

Things the grown-up me liked about SSA: - the character of Ben. So sympathetic, this genius-minded boy who thinks he's stupid because he cannot spell well or take tests. I'd like to see him discover more about why he has those difficulties, maybe gain some insight so he can make changes and boost his self-esteem. - Julian finds a bit of self-worth for himself, as well, and learns to embrace his nerdiness. - Greta already has a solid sense of self-worth, and a big ol' bunch of it. Confident girls are not so easy to find in adolescent literature. Greta's a terrific one. - the cool inventions the kids built. Too fun. And too much for Mr. SmartyPants Stringer to fight, heh heh.... - incredibly detailed illustrations. Must have taken forever to finish this one. (Although I will admit that the grown-up me finds all the text and detail in comics too distracting and overwhelming these days. This is the first graphic novel I've read in a long time.) - the heroic use of practical jokes to fight crime. Gotta love that. Things the child-me would have liked: - the cool inventions the kids built. I would have tried to build them, too. Or at least, built facsimiles and pretended they worked. - kids defeat the evil adult. Woo-Hoo!! Altogether, me-at-all-ages likes this fun graphic novel!
