I adored this book when I first read it! Sisterhood and family saga - I just loved Jo (could relate to her tomboyish nature).

In 1977 a man named Russell Lee Holmes was put to death for murdering six young children. It was believed that Russell was single and had no children. The day he was to die, he admits to a local reporter that he also killed 4-year old Meagan Stokes five years earlier. On the same night he is put to death, a 9-year old child is found drugged and abandoned at a Boston hospital by none other than Dr. Harper Stokes, Meagan's father. The Stokes adopt the abandoned girl (Melanie) and for twenty years their life is perfect. Now 20 years later, Melanie receives a disturbing phone call from a sleazy tabloid reporter claiming SHE is Russell Lee Holmes's child - the same man who was put to death in 1977. A cover-up and conspiracy is unearthed and Melanie turns to FBI Agent David Riggs for help. Did Russell Lee Holmes kill Meagan Stokes 25 years ago? If not, then who did? What happened to little Meagan and who were Melanie's birth parents? This suspenseful thriller kept me glued until the very last page. Just when I thought I'd figured everything out, the author throws another curve ball that squashed my theory! Excellent story!

This book changed my life. I think it is the first book that actually made me stop and think about what it means to be human and all the things you take for granted as a child. I re-evaluated authority figures, government, religion, and social taboos after reading this. I like where I've ended up and would shake Mr. Heinlein's hand were he still alive. I must give this book the highest praise I know: it made me think.

Review originally posted at Ramblings From This Chick Paying the Piper started of okay for me, but after a few chapters it just became so monotonous. If I had to hear Grace whine one more time about how it was unfair of her father to sell her mothers bar I was going to shoot myself. Even when Grace found out the reasoning behind it (which in my opinion was valid) she continued to bitch and moan. Then there is Jimmy, whom I didn't really understand. He seems to be really attracted to Grace and they start to have something and then he just pushes her aside as if she means nothing to him. It just seemed so out of character for what we had previously been shown of him. My other peeve about this book is the coming together of Grace and Jimmy. From the get go, these two are pretty hot for each other and have some pretty racy thoughts. Then when they finally get together the author shows some pretty hot foreplay and then just cuts to the next scene without showing the actual "coming together." This is one of my biggest pet peeves when reading. If you are going to put everything else in, then why wouldn't you put in the sex scene? Leave out the rest then. It just feels as if it isn't flowing well when that happens. All in all, this wasn't a horrible book despite the rating. It just wasn't my cup of tea.

This is a fun little gift idea for people who drive sort of fast, or just want to chuckle at the excuses people have used to get out of tickets. (One favorite: "I just got my nipples pierced so it hurts to wear a seatbelt.")

I agree with Ayelet's review. It was interesting, but I was just so pissed off at the main character and her way of handling things that the end of the book was just not satisfying.

Along with it's companion piece, this book might be the single most important piece of political writing ever. Read this to get an idea of the level of discourse went on when planning, debating and constructing our politcal system. These are some of the smartest men our country ever had to offer talking about things that are of the highest degree of importance.
