This book gives an eloquent lesson in the fundamental (digital?) mechanics of computers. Perfect for the layman, as well as for technical people who want to get closer to the circuit board.

This is a review in progress. As a person struggling to define her own faith, this book comes at a very auspicious time in my life. A friend and I had a discussion about religion in general and my pov fits in nicely so far with Pascal Boyer's view. Put simply, going into this book, I believed that religion is a concept that early hominids developed over time to explain the unexplainable every day things they encountered, like thunder, volcanic eruptions, a black cloud on the horizon... His pov which so far in chapter one boils down to the evolution of the brain over time, is one that I could give serious thought to. It explains much. I will however have to re-read it when I am done. His writing style is like that of a doctoral candidate doing a thesis, very above the average person's head. EDIT : I recently re-read this book. Second time round I find myself even more entrenched in an atheist leaning than agnostic. This book just makes sense to me more than any other.

A beautifully woven tale that reminds us that the secrets we keep to save others most often do more damage in the end.

I feel very indifferent towards this book. While I didn’t hate it, I didn’t feel drawn or moved by the story line or any of the characters. I didn’t get the point and the ending was just so out there that it left me saying “What was the point??”

Probably one of my least favorite in the series. I don't exactly know why. Some people say that this is their favorite. To each their own...

How can one possibly criticize the work of Nadine Gordimer? She's written a dozen novels; won the Nobel Prize for Literature; was a member of the ANC before it was legal; when Nelson Mandela was released from prison, Gordimer was one of the first people he wanted to see. No, one can't knock a writer who has done so much and so well. So i'll just say this--for fans of books written in a dense, restrained, 19th century realistic style.
Who understands pomos anyway?

An interesting story, that lacks some interest for kids, as it focuses a bit too much on the adults in the story, and their reaction to events. When six-year-old Ben is on his own the story gets much more gripping.

I give three stars cuz Ssalinger good job of developing sympathy for characters and a quality of loss of innocence in a backdrop that would otherwise seem benign and superficially sophomoric imparted by the high schoolers who are portrayed. Definitely more appreciated at a younger age. Specifically, before you realize you must become an adult.
