August 20, 2011: I've been trying to find more books by Cordelia Strube ever since I read and was blown away by *Lemon*. Normally, I prefer to purchase my books new and for full price. I like to think that I am supporting the authors and the whole book industry by doing so. But so far, I've struck out. Nothing in the stores and nothing available to order - either "sold out" or "temporarily unavailable to order". I'm starting to have my suspicions about that "temporarily" bit. Today though, on my almost daily jaunt over to Aqua books, I decided to check & see whether I could find any used copies. Eureka! Not one but two! This is one of them. And bonus points to me for putting my money where my mouth is to go buy something at Aqua Books (my favourite used book store in Winnipeg and self-proclaimed cultural city hall, that, sadly, recently announced it was closing because they just couldn't financially make a go of it any more).

Brilliant, partly made me get over my dislike of science fiction, and also, brilliant..

Dry but very interesting. Not a read-the-whole book through type book. I found it was best taken in small doses.

Gave me flashbacks of my time at Pitney Bowes. A good airplane read, but that's about it.

A Short History of Myth, by Karen Armstrong - about 3 stars; tough sledding, and really, until the last chapter, is only about a two star book - obviously, for me, it had a strong "finish"

squel to howl's castle. Not as fun but interesting to see what happens to the characters in the future.

best book in the entire world. i loved it all; characters, plot, everything from the beginning to the end, and all the tiny detail in between.

This is a dazzlingly ambitious book. It's about love! and war! and family! and religion! and America! and baseball!! The thing is though-- it works extremely well. I often found myself amazed that it worked as well as it did. It's a warm, compelling, likeable, and thoughtful book. It's got its philosophising and ambition, sure, but it's also just a good yarn. It didn't get the 5th star because the last 5th or so of the book struck me as much weaker-- the plot gets kinda odd, and things start to just feel 'off.' But overall, a good read. If you don't want to read the whole thing, at least check out the essay on Roger Maris. It's stuck right in the middle in Steinbeck-esque style, and is, in a way, the whole book in a nutshell.

I got about 20 pages in, and could not continue. I know everyone loved this book, but I just fell asleep.
