I kept on reading this book expecting that it would get better....but it didn't. I loved the *idea* of this storyline but it just didn't work for me. However, it did make me want to rent the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice. I heart Mr. Darcy!

This is a novel about a woman from Scotland who travels to China to marry a man, but ends up in an affair with a Japanese man. Abandoned by her community, she travels to Japan and lives for the next forty years (through World Wars and earthquakes and heartbreak). A bit difficult to get into, but well worth the read.

I gave this book ZERO stars because it was the longest, most boring read, ever! I always finish the books I start and this one was a doozy. I liked learning about Chris McCandless' death, but why did it have to take so many pages to talk about it. This author had a need to compare his own life to McCandless' which led to boredom - non-fiction boredom.

9th&up. While the beginning of this book took a little mental adjusting for a techno-neophyte like me, a couple of pages in- when the action went crack-happy in a hurry- I was hooked. I quickly got into the story and couldn't put it down. The stream of google, wikipedia and x-bot references that felt almost like ads was a bit irritating, but I actually liked the way Doctorow wove in mini-lectures about different technological tricks and devices. Guaranteed to (rightfully?) make you quite paranoid about the path our world is taking. Think an updated version of 1984 for the modern teen. References to drugs and sex and a high level of detailed techno-speak make it a read for older teens.

This is one reporter's version of events and it's obvious that he has a favorable opinion of Mr. Z. A very enjoyable read, accessible but not too simple. I hope Mr. Z stays true to his ideals.

I can read and reread part 1, book 1, of The Lord of the Rings ad infinitum. Tolkien's pacing is flawless---horror follows relief on the heels of fatigue, chasing hilarity. He pens stark desolation as well as he does milk-and-honey comfort, masterfully creating balance and movement.

powerful tales! this book feels a little goofy - still has some of the magic though

Your typical Jodi Picoult book, slightly disturbing but entertaining. I had a lot of people say they absolutely loved the book and it was a tear jerker, I just got annoyed with the ending.
