This was the first book I made Guan read and he actually finished it. It's not too long at all. This is one of my favorite plays ever - and we actually had discussions over this play. This became a Broadway Show with John Lithgow and B.D Wong in which he received a Tony Award for his role. I've also recommended this book to other friends who were all really glad to have read it. It definitely stirs up many topics of debate - Yippee! To me, the theme that the writer communicates through the characters is extraordinary. I really love the author's works and in this play, he uses his character development to transcend many Asian-American stereotypes. What is especially cool is the twist at the end! David Henry Wang is one of the few male playwright pioneers that depict Asian American issues through his works.

An excellent children’s biography of Benedict Arnold! I loved the way Sheinkin allowed people to speak in their own words, using quite a few period quotations, while at the same time explaining things in clear, modern terms. In addition, he was trying to capture one of the more complex figures in Revolutionary history. [Aug. 2011]

Read: 2/2/8/11 as part of "Shall We Dance?" theme. Everyone loved this book! Kids actively engaged in guessing which animal's feet were dancing. The brightly painted paper collage illustrations are eye catching and engaging. The text, filled with fun "sound words," is fun to read and encouraged my audience to guess which animal is dancing AND to dance like the animal. Read this one with the kids on their feet.

I liked this book, although it's not my favorite Heinlein (I still like "Time For The Stars"!). I think it's because I found "Sam" to be such a dislikeable character! He was so self-centered and sexist at some points, I almost wanted him to be taken over by slugs! For fans of the show "Futurama" you can clearly see where they got their ideas for New New York and for the brain slugs, which was fun. I found it sad when an atom bomb was dropped "near San Francisco, south of Burlingame" because the next city south of Burlingame is San Mateo, which is where I grew up! Sad!

In a word this book is intense. Parts are brutal, graphic, disturbing. I never read books about war and I was reminded why whilst reading this one. The UN has always been a subject of interest and frustration for me and reading this book only intensified those feelings. This quote sums the UN up for me "If blue-helmeted UN peacekeepers show up in your town or village and offer to protect you, run. Or else get weapons. Your lives are worth so much less than theirs" And there also lies the crux of war and our indifference to those dying in impoverished distant countries...some lives are worth more than others in the eyes of those with the power to create or destroy nations...even in the eyes of the ordinary citizen. Genocide is an incredibly ugly and indescribably brutal thing...and for it to occur the killers must have to dissasociate themselves from the humanity of their victims. If only each and every person could be viewed as someones, mother, father, child, husband, wife etc etc...This book takes you into the depths of horror and explores the idiocy of war. The three friends each had a reason for choosing to be in warzones...each had humanitarian reasons but each needed the wars in their own way, for their own reasons. Perhaps true and lasting peace can only ever be achieved when war is not needed anymore for any reason political or personal.

"Surely all art is the result of one's having been in danger, of having gone through an experience all the way to the end, where no one can go any further."

This is a fun book; it not only teaches about the different resources available at the library, but it also gets children excited to go to the library and to read. It's a great book to read aloud...especially at the library!

This novel will go down as one of my all time faves!!!! What a powerful story about 1963 through the eyes of a ten year old boy! I had the honor of meeting the author and shaking his hand, just a year ago. Mr. Christopher Paul Curtis was an extremely sincere man and thanked me for buying his book. I'm looking forward to reading other books by him!

I couldn't stop laughing with this book. It's crude, filled with offensive material, and I loved reading it. This is not a book for everyone, so be warned, but it's a great read.
