I truly enjoyed the artwork and the raw but common tales of lives lived. I felt the stories were well placed together and that they began and ended in just the right places- I wanted more but more might have spoiled them!

This book is a great read for summer. I really enjoyed the main character Colin is all his obsessive, selfish, and ultimately human characteristics. It's also one of those rare books that I think both boys and girls (or men and women) can relate to. The narrative also comes with footnotes and graphs to explain Colin's though processes. And, if you are into anagrams, you'll love this book.

What an incredible time to read this book, and to reflect on the comparative economic collapses. Made me desperately grateful for hot showers, bread, safety, my bed. My favorite point in the book was this hilarious, poignant exchange between Tom and a one-eyed man feeling sorry for himself, whining about how he can't get laid: Tom turned on him. "Now look-a-here, fella. You got that eye wide open. An' ya dirty, ya stink. Ya jus' asking for it. Ya like it. Lets ya feel sorry for yaself. 'Course ya can't get no woman with that empty eye flappin' aroun'. Put somepin on over it an' wash ya face." [...:] "I tell ya, a one-eye fella got a hard row,' the man said. 'Can't see stuff the way other fellas can. Can't see how far off a thing is. Ever'thing's jus' flat." Tom said, "Ya full of crap. Why, I knowed a one-legged whore one time. Think she was takin' two-bits in a alley? No, by God! She's gettin' half a dollar extra. She says, 'how many one-legged women you slep' with? None!' she says. 'Ok,' she says. 'You got somepin' pretty special here, an it's gonna cos' ya half a buck extry.' An by God, she was gettin' 'em, too, an' the fellas comin' out thinkin' they're pretty lucky. She says she's good luck. An' I knowed a hump-back back in--in a place I was. Make his whole livin' lettin' folks rub his hump for luck. Jesus Christ, an' all you got is one eye gone." The man said stumblingly, "Well, Jesus, ya see somebody edge away from ya, an' it gets into ya.' "Cover it up then, goddamn it. Ya stickin' it out like a cow's ass. Ya like to feel sorry for yaself. There ain't nothin' the matter with you. Buy yaself some white pants. Ya getting drunk and cryin' in ya bed, I bet." [...:] The one-eyed man said softly, "Think--somebody'd like --me?" "Why, sure," said Tom. "Tell 'em ya dong's growed sence you los' your eye."

Very good, quick read that offers alot in the time given. I like the ghost-story quality which I don't see much in the m/m genre. The character development flows at a good pace, and the story offers some nice surprises. Another winner for Josh Lanyon.

Want an alternate view of how to build peace in Pakistan and Afghanistan? You'll find it here, although you'll have to wade through a lot to discover the full and very worthy tale. The telling of it, unfortunately, proves its greatest weakness, as does its apparent effort to serve as a fundraiser and application for the Nobel Peace Prize for Greg Mortenson. After the "Into Thin Air" beginning, the story and the schools build slowly through a fairly consistent middle, then the account starts to rush before it finally corkscrews through 9/11 into Afghanistan. I won't list examples or explain further what I mean, and so dwell on the poor writing. My purpose in mentioning these weaknesses is to acknowledge a wistfulness for a better vehicle for such a worthy tale and to say, yes, readers will encounter some rough patches, but don't, don't, don't let it stop you from finishing the story. The reward--a sense of greater insight and compassion for some areas of the world badly in need of both from the Western world, especially the US, could not be more timely. And as much as I bemoan its overt attempts at self-glorification, I do hope it succeeds in encouraging people to contribute to a different approach to relating to the Muslim world.
