Couldn't believe the stuff in this book actually happened. The book had been sitting on my shelf for more than a year and I never picked it up after I bought it. Very quick read and I enjoyed it.

** spoiler alert ** Our St. Patrick's Day story this year, my 5 year old was not impressed when I claimed to have caught a leprechaun and traded the gold for a potato.

I really enjoyed this book. From the very first page, it grabs and throws you into the crazy and quite dysfunctional life of Mattie Johns, a powerhouse tough-as-nails employment recruiter whose life - romantic and professional - is falling apart. Then she gets asked to be a part of a new dating game show, the prize money from which might be the thing that saves her business. But is the game show all it seems? (Of course not!) The characters are quite real, and the tension just does not stop. There are hate-able back-stabbing bad guys, lovable misunderstood good guys, and I found myself hoping and wishing that everything would go well! An exciting book, recently released in paperback. I read on my Kindle. Totally recommend. :)

Bill Bryson romanticizes the British national character, but this is an entertaining read. It's especially valuable if, like me, you've read tremendous amounts of fiction that take place in parts of England you've never visited. It's full of keen observations on misguided progress in the form of architectural flops, and the loss of countryside and historical buildings. I immediately wanted to book travel to Heathrow and hop on the first train out into the English countryside. [Listened to audiobook on my ipod:]

The perfect sequel to Angela's Ashes. It was sad to see the story end with this book. I'm looking forward to reading Teacher Man next.

2nd part of the 2-volume Elvis extravaganza. Worth every page. Except this part of the story chronicles the long slide into perscription drugs, sexcapades, and inevitable overdose-on-toilet. There's still a lot to love about the guy, but you can't help but wish he'd have had some better advisors around instead of that crazy colonel.

On my Vanderbilt reading jag because of visiting Biltmore: this one delves into the individuals more than the previous book, and tends to be more conversational. It almost has a gossipy feel to it, which is kind of fun to read. It uses lots of quotes from numerous sources, so it's not just a dry history. What amazes me as I read about the Vanderbilts is how much money was spent so quickly and sometimes so thoughtlessly. I'm sure there were other wealthy folk in the Gilded age you did the same, but the Vanderbilts started with so much more. The Commodore made $100 million, and two generations later, some of his heirs were broke. I guess one way to view it is that they literally shared the wealth by spending so freely; besides the household help they employed, there were myriad other tradespeople who benefited as well. I started re-reading Edith Wharton's "House of Mirth" along with these books, and it's interesting to semi-recognize the Vanderbilts and other society figures in the fictional characters.
Love this book. Anyone with prideful stirrings for the University of Chicago will love it too.
Rereading this, I was most struck by (1) how absurdly funny and delightful Austin's prose is ("a specialist in the sui generis"; "we can insincerely promise to give a donkey a carrot", "we may seem to have armed ourselves with two shiny new concepts with which to crack the crib of Reality", etc. etc.), and yet (2) how weirdly legalistic most of this book is. And I'm left really wishing that Austin would have given an example illustrating how "the truth or falsity of a statement depends not merely on the meanings of words but on what act you were performing in what circumstances". Obviously the truth of a statement depends on the circumstances, but how does the truth of a statement depend on what act you were performing? Moreover, he says a statement IS a kind of (illocutionary) act, so how could the truth of an act depend on what act you were performing with it?
