Todd Hewitt is the last boy in Prentisstown. It will only be another 30 days before he will reach his birthday and become a man. He lives in a town, and as far as he knows, in a world without women, but filled with "Noise", thoughts of every man and animal streaming out in the world for everyone to hear. When Todd wanders with his dog Manchee out in the swamp to collect some apples, he comes across a pocket of pure silence. Worried and afraid he runs back home, only to be greeted by the two guys that raised him, a packed backpack and a worried Ben telling him that he will need to leave. It seems his "Noise" has revealed his discovery to the rest of town. Not quite understanding what is going on, he starts running. On his way, he finds a girl, a town in which men and women live and work together and "Noise" from other people reveals to him that there seem to be a lot of things Prentisstown's inhabitants have kept a secret from him. This was a great book, that drew me in straight away. It took me a little to get used to the writing style, as it shows Todd's simple way of living with some misspellings, mixed up grammar and punctuation (there is none at times), but as it worked well with the story and the character, it soon didn't bother me. It actually added something to the story. The story itself was often sad and terrifying. Todd was a character that grew on me overtime, as at first I wasn't entirely sure if I liked him. It was interesting to see, how he changes a little over the book through his growing friendship with Viola, mistakes he's making on the way and finding out more about the world around him. The one thing I could have lived without was Aaron. I know he is an important part of the story but he didn't have to pop up quite as often. All up it was a very good story and I'll pick up the next instalment soon, as the book does end on a cliffhanger and I really want to find out what is going to happen next.

A passable fantasy novel, geared to Raymond Feist fans who will appreciate the origin story of Jimmy the Hand -- a character who appears in other Riftwar books. Note that Raymond Feist did not actually write this book. In the afterword he admits to only penning the rough outline of the story and giving it to S.M. Stirling to actually write. I only mention this because Stirling, unfortunately, is not as engaging a writer as Feist.

What a wacky book! It is narrated very strangely. The author/narrator reveals what the grand finale will be like almost immediately. Besides that, things are described in an odd way either by stating the obvious in a silly way or by showing little doodles drawn by Vonnegut himself. It tells the story of two characters who are going to meet but bad things will happen when they do! I wouldn't exactly call the plot gripping but the narration is just so weird, so original that it was quite enjoyable.

I read this book because my grandmother recommended it and it's nice to have something to talk about with her. It was a nice read--and perhaps it is because I am not a pet lover--but I really didn't get why everyone is raving over it. Well-written and there were a few laugh out loud moments for me, but it wasn't paticularly emotionally involved or tear jerking for me. I did, at a few points, want to smack the owners for allowing their dog to run their lives.

Mysteries just really aren't my thing because I can usually figure them out well before the end of the book. Heather Wells, former pop star, is a Resident Assistant at a prestigious college in NYC. After a series of killings of students, she sets out to discover who is committing the mysterious murders. This book was okay but I don't believe I'll be reading the rest of the Heather Wells series.

Too Macbeth-y, and a little too obvious.
