An interview with Maarten Troost, author of Sex Lives of Cannibals, revealed Paul Theroux as one of his favorite authors. Thusly, I picked this book up.
On his 11th birthday Will discovers that he has a special task to perfom - my favorite in this series.

I love it. The story line is unique and the character's are awesome. The bad guy is kind of scary though, sometimes it gives me nightmares. c:

The series illustrates (literally I guess) the power and relevance of the graphic novel. The set-up is that while the US military is occupied overseas, anti-establishment militias in the mid-west rise up to form an army that sweeps east, finally hitting a stalemate at the Hudson River. Manhattan Island forms a demilitarized zone between the opposing forces. This may have seemed far fetched a few years ago when the series began, but given the rise of scary right-wing populism these days, with people like Glenn Beck gaining big ratings, the idea is not completely unrealistic(and recall that the OKC bombings were home-grown terrorists). The premise allows Wood to explore issues that are very much real and contemporary: A prominent cable news outlet functions as the mouthpiece of the government, insurgents roam the city, a multinational corporation, a sort of Haliburton/Blackwater hybrid, operates with little oversight and a massacre of protesters leads to a Rashomon-like military trial. Wood also explores the human side through the experiences of the main character, Matty, an intern cum war correspondent. The art work is visceral and arresting, the stories heart wrenching, and the political satire sharp.
A young girl's family is moving away from the only home she has ever known in the prairie. She thinks that her younger sibling - still an infant - won't be affected because he "doesn't know about the slough / where the pipits feed. / Where the geese sky-talk in the spring." In fact, he "hasn't even seen winter." She thinks about living with the new people who have bought their family's farm, or living in a tree, or even moving in with her Uncle Bly and eating pie for breakfast. She imagines herself living in the barn, "listening / to the rain on the tin roof / the wind rattling the windows" but ultimately, her mother convinces her that she has to come with them, if only to remind the baby what he knew first. She collects her memories of songs and the softness of cows' ears, and some mementos of her home - a bag of prairie dirt, a twig from her father's cottonwood tree - and she knows that it's so she can remember these things, too. Moser’s beautiful, moody engravings tell more of the subtextual story, and delineate time and setting. USAGE: The benchmarks we could hit using this book as a tool are uncountable. Just in standards about the writing process, this book could provide inspiration for many wonderful classroom experiences. Students will learn concepts of prose and poesy by discovery with a learning center dedicated to rearranging the poetry of MacLachlan’s book into prose and then back again. After this exploration, a discussion about how to decide on a structure for a particular piece of writing could lead to the students bringing in their own what-they-knew-first mementos, from which they could write their own What I Knew First poem or memoir. Afterward, they could publish them as a class.

Typical Nora!! Great to have 3 love stories in 1 book!
It was difficult for me to get used to the idea of costumed superheros as serious characters. I wasted a lot of time scoffing at the ridiculous names, outfits and subterranean lairs. But once you accept the premise for what it is and allow yourself entry in to Alan Moore's world, it is a very complex and mature story. Which is more important, truth or peace, and who should make that decision?

A classic novel that I hadn't read before, in spite of seeing the movie, and I was not disappointed. Though not my favorite Austen novel, I certainly loved it more than the book, and am happy that I read it!

Clever, contemporary, clean dialogue. Well, take back the latter adjective. I mean crisp, well delivered, punchy dialogue, delivered by real people. Great punch...and great punch line! Read it! You'll laugh...in a good way ;D
