I know this book is quite popular and the motion-picture adaptation comes out this summer, but I could not get into it. The protagonists just weren't that likeable. I'm sure it was meant to be "realistic," stumbling through life trying to figure out what you really want to do, altering your worldview as you age from your twenties to thirties to forties, but I just didn't enjoy reading about so many drunken mistakes. I liked Emma somewhat better than Dexter but she seemed a bit pathetic, and too much of a stereotype sometimes. I finished the book more out of a desire to be done with it then a passion to see how it ended, and I don't think it's a good sign that I don't at all care whether I ever see the movie or not. It was an interesting mechanism (only telling one day, the same date, every year), but it just wasn't my cup of tea.

Very brilliant set of short stories based on thought-provoking premises. I felt like my mind was bending every time I read it.

A timeless fable about human nature and our ability to govern ourselves. This was sitting on my bedside table forever but when I finally picked it up I read in one evening. I missed this one in school (not sure how) but better late than never. Orwell is honest and unapologetic in his allegory. It is as relevant today as when it was published.

Snyder creates an very promising world with an interesting concept--Yelena's a prisoner granted a reprieve in order to be trained as a food tester (so, necessarily, a poison expert) for the king. The romance in the second half was not as much to my liking (but I'm not a teenager). Library note: PG-13, some descriptions of torture and rape (not radically explicit but potentially disturbing), sexual innuendo
Great read - very interesting and thought provoking book!
This series is set in Chicago where the local vampires have only recently revealed their existence. They’re dead to the world during the day but still want to establish relationships with city officials and make nice with the public that they’re tired of hiding from. They govern themselves in local Houses under the Greenwich Presidium and it’s all very civilized. It’s also an ancient and well established Master/subservient system with a library of rulebooks. This is grad student Merit’s new life when she gets turned after an attack on campus. Merit resents what happened to her, being made a vampire against her will. Her new liege, Ethan, actually saved her from another vampire who would have left her for dead. But since he rearranged her life and her future, leaving Cadogen House and his rule as her only option, she’s not exactly grateful. And there’s a whole world she didn’t know about that she’s now a part of: magic, shifters, nymphs, and a surprising family connection to it all. Merit gets involved in enough situations to keep the story interesting. She’s smart and not at all inclined to be submissive, but also appreciates a system that’s bigger than she is. There are a few bumps when her wunderkind vampirism saves her from certain embarrassment, but usually these characters are believable. I like the world and the friendships. A breezy read.

Better than the second one in the the series. The choice of a hero with Asperger's or another social disorder syndrome was interesting, but it really worked for this book.
Nice easy read with a interesting story of love and art.

This book just had too many dragons and running from danger, etc. Young boys will love it but I was bored. Getting a little predictable.

the book was well written but for whatever reason it didn't grab me as something remarkable. the character development is excellent and you get a good idea of who a person is even if they only make a brief appearance in the story.
