** spoiler alert ** A very intriguing novel that opened my eyes to a continent I am otherwise unfamiliar with: Africa. Set in an unnamed African country that just gained independence (I read a review that speculated it was the Belgian Congo transitioning into Zaire), the book is narrated by Salim. Salim has a unique perspective because he is an ethnically Indian Muslim living in Africa. He socializes mostly with other ex-Pats from various places from around the world and is a shopkeeper in a small, growing city in the country's remote interior. The challenge is to live a meaningful and profitable existence in the midst of a country in turmoil. Some other problems faced by Salim are the ebbs and flows of nationalistic fervor, where periodically he and other foreigners are marked as easy targets for the native people to exploit. I think Selim's thoughtfulness and efforts to find meaning in his life are provocative to say the least. I am still a little stunned about the last few chapters, where his relationship with Yvette crumbles and he goes to London. I understand why his relationship was doomed, but the way he ends it left me much less sympathetic towards his character and less inclined to side with him on most other issues as a result. And, after staying in London for only six months, he gives up on it and returns to his home in Africa where everything has changed for the worse and he must flee for his life in a matter of days anyway.. Very peculiar ending to what would have been, in my opinion, a much better book.

Wow, it was SOOO different to read a book from NOT a Soviet or American point of view. It was incredibly difficult for me at first to keep reminding myself that Germans were indeed the enemies of my country. It was so easy to get into their lives and realize that those people were human and suffering just as much as the Soviet people were. Not by choice most of the time. I loved the development between the little girl and her friend. Totally made me cry at the end. But, I just wish there were more explained at the end. I felt like I wanted to know more in details of what happened to the girl and the Jew. But maybe that was the whole point. Highly recommend this book. Excellent and easy read.
Faster paced book than Boomsday. Also very funny. Some parts are predictable and a bit contrived, but overall another great social commentary.

This is my all time favorite children's book. As an aunt, my mission is to make sure any new nieces and nephews get this book as a gift from me. It's simple wording and incredible illustration open the imagination. It also tells our children that no matter what bad choices they make in the beginning, they will always have a warm and loving home waiting for them.

This has some great training ideas in it and I liked the way it is all positive training (no choke collars, no whacking with a newspaper, etc.). The tips really work too, although keep in mind that my puppy is a Golden Retriever, one of the easiest breeds to train. I'd be curious to hear how it would work for harder-to-train breeds like Schipperkes. The author could have spared us all her name dropping and family history, but I suppose that it could be entertaining for some readers.

I realize it's a young adult book, but I loved it in fifth grade and reread it this spring - and it's still as beautifully written as ever.
