I loved this book- it is so interesting and thought provoking with a great ending!!! You definitely should read it!! But beware- the first few chapters take a bit to get through but stick with it and you won't regret it.

A true classic, this book has more allusions and critical analysis possible than most books (with the obvious exception of The Crying of Lot 49). It also happens to be a most melancholy love story, and begs the question of exactly who we all are when we happen to forget ourselves.
The heroine of "Crocodile on the Sandbank" is an absolute hoot. If you like historical mysteries, are a secret ancient Egypt buff, are interested in strong (and funny) female characters, then this is the book for you.

Pretty good lay explanation of quantum mechanics, although some general science education would be helpful in understanding it. What I liked most was the author's observation that when we speak of science, we are not really speaking about absolute truths- rather, we are defining a model that can accurately explain and predict the universe. The author shows how more than one model can be used, and how the very human aspects of the scientists lead to "trends" in the development of scientific theories.

I thought that this book was a lot more thrown together than the last two. I really enjoyed Child 44 and The Secret Speech and felt that the character development was a lot better. However in this book, the whole character development in the last 2 books and Leo went back to the hard nosed cold personality that he was at the beginning of Child 44. The story set in Kabul was 100 pages too long and I really thought it would be better if he solved the mystery in NY and the rest was set in Russia. Also the ending was unconvincing for me. That said it was an enjoyable read, just not as good as the first two books.

I read this book for my AP English Composition class as a study on essay writing. It was delightful. John McPhee writes about science and the environment the way most fiction authors write about love affairs and dreams.
