I am really enjoying this book. While the authour spends a lot of time talking about locations and their relation to other locations there are lots of maps that help give the reader a perspective of what is being talked about. I am getting a real feel and understanding of the people that I learned about a long time ago in my history classes.

Such a beautifully written book and again, made me count my blessings. A great perspective on German people living through WWII and their mentalities. Showed the importance of "words" - how they can impact you, your community, and nations.

It's the Koran. Even if, like me, you are not religious you should still read the Koran since it is such a big part of this world. If for no other reason than to have some sort of understanding into what everyone is talking about and fighting over and if you are religious, if you are Christian or Muslim you HAVE to read this so that no one else can tell you what it says; if you rely on others they can mislead you, whether purposely or not, down the wrong path to understand the true message of this collection of stories.

This is the third novel in the Isabel Dalhousie novel although it's not necessary to read the first two in the series. I think I've read only the first one. Isabel is a middle age editor of a philosophy (applied ethics) journal and lives in Edinburgh, Scotland. She has a niece Cat who owns a deli. Cat's ex-boyfriend is Jamie who has taken a liking to Isabel and the feeling is mutual. There is no complicated plot, no mystery to solve. This is a story of Isabel's life over a period of a few months. She has a cousin + husband from Dallas visiting. They have another friend from Dallas who is also visiting Scotland with his fiance. Could she be a gold-digger? What happens when Cat finds out that Isabel is dating her ex-boyfriend? Because Isabel is a philosopher, she expresses thoughts that us mere mortals don't process as deeply. For instance, -- gazing into a stranger's eye is an acknowledging one's shared humanity. -- are atheists capable of showing love/morality at one's deathbed? What type of person would you like at your deathbed? An atheist or someone with faith? -- if dreams are internal rhetoric or internal debates, what does it mean when others in our dreams speak? Do those spoken words have meaning? -- can you kill someone to save your life even if your victim is not responsibility for creating the threat on your life? Here's the lifeboat issue: if you're on a lifeboat and everyone is hungry, can you kill someone for your nourishment? I do like the author's description of hell: cocktail party every night requiring mandatory attendance and there's no alcohol to help you with "cocktail chit chat". Easy read but the ending was a surprise to me. I didn't expect it.

Whoa. Intense. Incredible story. My view of Chinese communism has totally been enlightened by this careful, powerful book. There is a balance of political facts and human interest in this non-fiction book, and some disturbing imagery of the pains faced by the Chinese people at the hands of Mao. Really, a must read, though not an easy one. I read this while I was still nursing, and needed to spend about an hour a day while at work pumping. One story about a woman hung by her hands in the middle of the village as punishment by the communists. She was a nursing mother, and her breasts leaked milk onto the ground, where her baby tried to lick it up out of the dirt. This book makes the persuasive argument that Mao did not believe in the ideology of communism, only in self-promotion and power. His driving ambition in combination with a sociopaths detachment from the human toll of his initiatives set the country back years and resulted in millions of deaths.
