Read this book like 5 times for various classes. It is great to talk about, but I don't really like the book. House of Mirth was better. Newland always seems like such a tool

The follow up to Something Borrowed. I should say, the less likeable, follow up to Something Borrowed. This book is written from the point of view of the scorned best friends and how she deals with life post break up. While that may seem exactly what you need right now to pick you up, it probably won't be. The main character is difficult to like because you spent 200 hundred pages in the first book believing that she was the bad guy in order to make THAT plot line work. Read it to see what happens, but take it with a grain of salt.

Though Umberto Eco's brilliance is well-known, I could have likely ripped chapters from this novel without hurting the plot at all. Although it was incredibly dense with intrigue, and the characters were delightful, Eco tried to do far too much in the space of one novel. We could not fully determine whether this was a philosophical romp through the middle ages of heretical paranoia, or an intricately devised murder mystery. I wish he had written a novel about each, but made them two separate stories. This had the unfortunate ring of a textbook, since so much information was crammed into its numerable pages.

Quite possibly my favorite book on WWII. A unique perspective on all aspects of Japanese life during a time of war. I loved the fact that the book is a compilation of diary entires and accounts from every walk of life. This book is truly fascinating in every aspect.
I loved this book, but it is, in my opinion, the geekiest book I have ever read. It has cryptography, computer science, physics, and WWII history all wrapped together in a 1000-page package. Definitely not for the faint of heart.
Was given this by a friend and thoguht, well, i'm sick, and everyone needs a little chick-lit sometimes, right? bleah. I can handle Bridget as a movie character, in a book she's too much...

I finished this this morning over an Americano: perfect. Peaceful, mournful, hypnotizing, this read like a film--an especially beautiful and excellent one. Highly recommended.

A funny, heartbreaking weave of stories with a baroque abandonment of flourishes and liberties. I was fascinated by how it somehow keeps its shape, amidst all the wit and weird imaginative twists, but the reason I give it four instead of five stars is that I'm old enough to appreciate restraint above shooting with all guns. Two other authors that ride this line are Tom Robbins and David James Duncan. I love their work, but can't help feeling like they're kind of showing off.
