i read this on the many buses i rode down to Panama. I guess I liked Moore's humorous and biting commentary on European politics. The foreword attached to my edition said that most people didn't get it and thought it was a real civilization on a real island. I guess he got to keep his head. Or maybe Cronwell (or are my time periods all messed up) got him afterall, i don't remember. It was good.

He's really not that stupid, our snoop.' The phone rang again. 'Good heavens! I would never have thought he had so many customers.' She grabbed the receiver. 'Pronto!' she said in a low voice. 'Victor Getz's office. How can I help you?'" Victor Getz lives in Venice where he works as a private investigator. His current assignment: to find Boniface (Bo), who has run away with his brother, Prosper, to this beautiful city after their mother died. Lost in the great city of Venice, the brothers stumble upon a group of orphans who is lead by someone who claims to be the Thief Lord. As they continue their adventure, they find themselves unraveling the truth, and the mystical journey it takes them on. Funke has written several books that I particularly love including Dragon Rider, Ink Heart, and Ink Spell, all of which have magical tales and wonderful worlds created through Funke's delicate words. These books are more geared toward younger readers, such as middle school, but even as a older reader, I still loved "The Thief Lord" in particular. And it's because it shows that sometimes, you can't force yourself to grow up, and wishing you were younger isn't any better. To be happy with who you are cause once it goes, you can't bring it back.

A strong, kickass, female, (brunette!) protagonist? Major check! And, as a strong, female, (brunette!) librarian, that alone earns author Suzanne Collins major points from me. I love Katniss Everdeen, but I love "The Hunger Games" even more. It's a definite page-turner, and probably would have been even more so had I not seen the film before reading the book.But consider this a testament to the awesomeness of the story: each page is so packed with action, suspense, surprise, or all three, it seems that the Hollywood movie-makers (or, should I say "Gamemakers", perhaps?) really remained quite loyal and ventured very little from the novel for their film. The book itself is that much of a blockbuster. I'm already itching to get my hands on "Catching Fire"!

This short novella was an interesting read, especially so because I had already read Suite Francaise and enjoyed it so much. However, I don't think it was nearly as good or compelling, and I think that it was only half formulated in the author's head. It seemed that, in places, she formulated scattered thoughts, meant to be expanded upon, perhaps researched and tweaked - but never finished, of course, as she was hauled off to Auschwitz to her death
