Could NOT put it down! Loved the character development and plot twists. Some subplots were unnecessary that only distracted the reader from the main characters.
incomparable, but how's bachian in that the perfectly balanced sentences which seem too mathematical for emotional truth yet somehow produce cathedral feelings. besides the depth of its history and its profound integrity--one's struck by this aftereffect: being left with a particular question i associate with only a few masterpieces: How did he do that? ___________________ It was necessary, he found, to approach this subject obliquely, and to invent a new literary form, part hybrid novel, part memoir and part travelogue, often involving the experiences of one "WG Sebald", a German writer long settled in East Anglia. He was reluctant to call his books "novels", because he had little interest in the way contemporary writers seemed to find all meaning in personal relationships, and out of a comic but heartfelt disdain for the "grinding noises" which heavily plotted novels demanded. "As he rose from the table, frowning ..." was precisely the type of clumsy machinery, moving a character from here to there, which Sebald mocked. --from the GUARIAN obit. http://books.guardian.co.uk/news/arti...

A Swiss woman who is at the crossroads of life decides to go live in Saudi Arabia. She knows someone who knows a princess and is then invited to live at her home. She describes in depth the lifestyles combining the positives and the negatives. Unfortunately since she has little or no contact with those outside of the palace, she doesn't see how the average person lives. She does explain though how most of the Saudi women she met thought that the West did not take care of its women because they have to work and clean the house, and can be divorced even if they "give" their husband a son. Interesting viewpoints to ponder.

I think it's a good book don't get me wrong. Especially the last part but I thought it was more childish than the story arc from the lord of the rings

I have a feeling an interesting story is buried in this book somewhere, but I could not for the life of me find it. This book was frustrating and confusing, but I believe it was so simply because of the nature of the spy game. Anyway I imagine the movie will be much more enjoyable.
I absolutely LOVED this book!!! Masterly written, a love story to rival the best...look out Pride and Prejudice, Jane and Edward may have you beat!
eh. It's ok. Overrated, though, I think.
An interesting look into the life of a man living in London. McEwan develops his characters in a very conscientious manner and the pace sometimes seems to slow, but not to the point of boredom. The specture of 9/11 looms large in the book without much, if any (I read it a while ago...I need some slack), direct mention. A very insightful look at the world and the state it's in from an older, rarefied perspective.
