What better way to pontificate on both poverty at the global level and the individual level than travel the world talking to poor people and asking them why they are poor? Vollmann indeed does exactly that. Poor People is an easily readable book. For those of you seeking anecdotes from poor people, this book is for you.

This book really grabs you from the start. The way that everything finally starts to drop in place is amazing. The love story's are getting a little jumbled and annoying but the rest of the story is really getting exciting.

Raskin's inability to be faithful to any one woman causes him to adopt the inventor of instant ramen (Momofuku Ando) as his higher power. He writes letters to Ando and learns from Ando's life story as part of his recovery. Lots of Japanese food, manga, and samurai movie references. The book is going to be difficult if you do not find the author sympathetic (or at least pathetic and interesting). The combination of his writing, sense of humor, and genuine unhappiness and self loathing was enough to overcome most of the personal issues I had with Raskin's behavior. It is not for everyone, but for the right person, it is a pretty terrific book.
I enjoyed this book a lot. I didn't want to stop reading until I finished the book. I like how the story is told from different points of view. Each character has a different perspective and allows the reader to wonder what is right, and what is wrong. Overall, a pretty sad novel, and the ending was not what I expected...

A disconcerting account. The stuff of small town/suburbia.

I liked this book because it pushed me to think about the events and people in my life, seemingly insignificant, but which could have been more impactful. For the future, nothing is insignificant.

Once referred to derisively as "vanity publishing," self-published books are finally taking their place alongside more accepted indie categories such as music, film, and theater. Indie Publishing is a practical guide to creating and distributing printed books regardless of your background, skill set, or ambition. It will help you realize projects of every scale and budget, from the traditional bookmaking techniques used to create zines to the more ambitious industrial production methods required to produce hardcover books in large quantity. Indie Publishing's special focus on the visual design of books makes it unique among publish-it-yourself manuals. Readers are taken step-by-step through the process of designing a book to give it personal style as well as visual coherence and authority. Design principles such as scale, cropping, pacing, and typography are explored in relation to each example, along with commentary on how to create effective title pages, tables of contents, captions, and more. Indie Publishing aims to inspire readers with examples of print projects similar to those they might undertake on their own. Sample designs include a picture book, artist's portfolio, exhibition catalog, poetry chapbook, novel, and zine. Indie Publishing addresses the important business aspects of independent publishing—from how and why you should get an isbn number to creating promotional materials and using the Internet to market your book. This comprehensive, illustrated guide concludes with a curated portfolio of the most exciting examples of independent publishing from the contemporary scene, reproduced in full color. If you have content to share and you want to give it a fresh and orderly form, this book will kick-start your project and keep you motivated until the ink dries. The golden age series is moderately well written - but very entertaining. One of those "wouldn't it be cool if..." pseudo-hard tech futures. However given the technology, the resulting civilization is a bit under imagined, the and the hero is a bit simple-minded.

This book is often as beautiful as poetry...about Ireland and The Troubles, one woman's life in retrospect as told when she is 100 years old in an institution but perfectly lucid, it is simply so wonderfully written even if the ending is a bit...quickly wrapped up. He won the Booker Prize for A Long Long Way which I now want to read immediately. My new favorite writer!
