This novel is like a diarrhea of the brain. Or least many of the passages read as such, like the author didn't know when to stop. With all the overly long descriptions and nonsensical run-on sentences, the book overstays its welcome. But I'm giving it three stars (instead of two) because of the tantalizing tale of "the kid" that begins the story. Unfortunately, that tale is quickly lost among the stream-of-consciousness of random violent encounters and the one thousand and one ways the author can describe sand blowing around the desert.
This book was great in the way that it didn't shove WWII down your throat, yet was a war story book. I loved the mystery and how Joanne Harris weaved yet again, yummy food into her story...it was very interesting but for me, she didn't resolve some important questions in my mind and that's why only 3 stars.

I would definitely give this book a five, but to be fair, it's a four that is so close to a five it feels four breathing on it's neck... The beloved story of a wizard from birth with great powers on a life long journey which is to be filled with magic, romance, adventure and most brilliantly; Hogwarts! I can't imagine someone reading this book and not enjoying it. It is almost like the pages are lined with some sort of addictive drug, I just couldn't put it down...glue to my hands it was!

This was an amazing account of three boys survival through the war in Sudan. It was put together chronologically, but was simply their journal entries about their memories. It is amazing what the human body and mind can go through and overcome. It definitely made me want to learn more about the war in Sudan. WE humans can be so INHUMANE towards each other it is astounding and frightening.

This book is a series of short essays based on discussions between the author and various jazz musicians. The discussions take place in the course of listening to various music selected by the musicians as most meaningful to them. I liked the book, although I understood virtually none of the technical music discussions (and sometimes not much of the musicians' philosophical musings either -- they were "far out, man...") But Ratliff is a good writer, and it was interesting to view the distinct personalities of the musicians, many of whom are well-known names, even to jazz ignoramuses like me. (Plus, it's fun to have some of the music to listen to; thanks, Jack!) Mike, I think you will like this; I'll save it for you.

Holy toledo. Amazing. Update soon...
This was one of the most devastating, heartbreaking books I have ever read. I almost quit reading it but I just kept on reading. So sad.
A good, solid historical fiction about the pandemic in 1793. For a younger audience.
One of the best His Fic I've ever read. A friend recommended it, saying it had quite a bit in common with To Kill A Mockingbird, and she was right. I admire the character Harry probably more than any other. He grows up and becomes a strong, thoughtful, courageous person.
