Got on my Jeanette Winterson kick after reading Written on the Body for a Grad Class. So incredible--I love her

A smashing good read, if such terminology is ever appropriate to what is, let's face it, not the most life-affirming of subjects. This, the first volume of an envisaged trilogy aiming to be the most authoritative single account of the history of the Third Reich, certainly acheives this aim. While it is true that this work only serves to continue the domination of the Nazi period over German historiography as a whole, if you're going to do it, one might as well do it so well!

Stephen King says: "Swashbuckling pirates with candles in their beards, a smart and beautiful young woman liberated from slavery, kinky sex, sword fights, double-dealing...and a stirring account of how rational scientific thought was born. All told with a sense of humor. Very cool. And you can follow Eliza, Daniel Waterhouse, and ''Half-Cocked Jack'' Shaftoe through two more fat volumes in Stephenson's Baroque Cycle. Lucky you."

I thought I would be giving this four stars, and then I got to the much-discussed power point chapter and had no choice but to give this book five stars. The emotion conveyed in that chapter is breath taking. The book - basically a collection of inter-locking short stories - is not a happy one, but it's deeply human, and I was enthralled.

So, I read this book between two heavy-duty distopians. I knew I'd need some relief, and I'd had this on my list for a longgg time. It was brilliant! The writing was easy and fun. I was cracking up CONSTANTLY, and all of the charecters-Anna, St.Clair...were so believable and sweet. I really enjoyed how Anna made mistakes, but that they weren't ones that made me want to end her ink-and-paper life. I've dreamed for days about going to a boarding school in France! I have to give this book 4 stars because-as Anna says-I'm not going to be a critic that's soft and gives everything I read five stars. But it was a good book. Definately not thought provoking, nothing that will make my top-books-of-all-awesomeness list, but a good book. Light, romantic, funny-give it a read when you need a pick-me-up!

First read in May 2007, and re-read in 2015 after reading her book Some Assembly Required: a Journal of My Son's First Son. Great book. Loved it!

This book was an incredible read. I usually have a hard time with non-fiction. (I lose my endurance about two thirds the way through.) Egan's writing is very smooth, and while he explains much of the history behind what caused the Dust Bowl, most of the story is told from personal experience. The people in the book were so relatable that I had to remind myself this wasn't a novel. I learned about the Dust Bowl some in school, but Egan skillfully depicts People who lived in the area at this time developed the kind of severe help problems in a few years that career miners only get in their lifetime. When livestock died and got cut up, people would find their insides filled with dust. One or two really bad storms blew all the way to the East Coast, and this isn't the half of it. Even after reading this book it's hard to really fathom the scope of what happened. And at the risk of sounding preachy, we could learn a thing or two from this environmental disaster.

You should read this book after reading several of his others. He makes references to his novels, and many real life stories of his were embellished for his novels, so reading them now made me appreciate his skill as a writer. [http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/...]
