I loved this story; sweet and real. This story is about coming to terms with painful realities, love and friendship and who family really is. It takes place in a great setting: South Carolina in the early 60's - and is one of the first books taking place in that time period, that doesn't rip my heart out and throw it in a blender. Loved the honey theme gently woven in. I absolutely recommend it and its a quick read! Technically I was impressed (it was refreshing) that the author stayed with the main (young) character narrating. So many authors use an adult voice to explain adult things/themes, when also using youth voices, but this author didn't do that.

The true story of Ishmael Beah and the journey that led him to become a boy soldier. Heartbreaking and tragic, but gives hope that change is possible and lives can be transformed. From his own words: "I am from Sierra Leone, and the problem that is affecting us children is the war that forces us to run away from our homes, lose our families, and aimlessly roam the forests. As a result, we get in the conflict as soldiers, carriers of loads, and many other difficult tasks. All this is because of starvation, the loss of our families, and the need to feel safe and be part of something when all else has broken down [...] I am not a soldier anymore; I am a child."

British Veterinarian, James Herriot, warms the heart and stimulates laughter with his second collection of autobiographical tales of his practice in the Yorkshire dales. It continually amazes me that Herriot is apparently just as skilled with a pen as he is a scalpel or syringe. Even 80 years after the occurrence of these events, his stories are captivating and strangely relevant.
Federal Judge Grace Silva's husband has given their son to a Mexican drug lord as collateral on some investments. When the money and the husband go missing, Grace is given 48 hours to produce them or her son dies. She calls the only person who can help, Joe Faroe, an agent of St. Kilda (like the FBI, but without rules and government), whom she had a relationship with 16 years prior. The plot is engaging and believable, the characters are well-developed and authentic, and the writing is exceptional. The romantic scenes are hot without being distracting from the plot or cringe-worthy. A first rate novel. Had a hard time putting it down.

Simply amazing. Read it!
This was my first forray into the huge world of Batman. I'm still not entirely sure whether it was the ideal start, but one has to start somewhere; and after having read "The Dark Knight Returns" I'm really glad I chose this one to start with. And Batman or no Batman, this is an absolutely fantastic piece of art. First of all, it was good to start with something familiar - I've loved Dave McKean's work ever since I read "Sandman", obviously. And I don't think I've ever seen a comic where the art fit so well to the story like with this one. On April 1, Arkham Asylum is taken over by its inhabitants, and according to the Joker's demands, Batman has to go in there, alone, in order to save the hostages. The Joker wants to show him that this, rather than the "sane" world, is where Batman belongs. At the same time, we also learn about the history of the Asylum, and the result is a wonderfully twisted tale of the past and the present. I was genuinely creeped out by the story and the art and the lettering (the Joker especially comes to mind), and the atmosphere was really - well, creepy and uncanny. I love it when that happens, since I don't tend to scare that easily. It really pulled me in, and it truly felt like I was in Arkham Asylum with Batman and his adversaries. In this edition, there is also the script of the comic plus some notes by Grant Morrison. I found them rather helpful and really really interesting (I always love to read how comics come into existance - I still am such a novice to this world and it's fascinating to peek behind the curtain). I was rather confused by most of the villains, since I pretty much only knew the Joker and Two-Face, but even though I suspect a lot of things went over my head, it was still a really enjoyable read. And more than that. It became an instant favourite, and I cannot recommend it enough.

continuation, second book in series. this is the one w/ the kinky dwarf sex, but also the one w/ my favorite scene-let (yes, i'm a sap -- it's the sansa and hound bit during the battle of the blackwater), though not the one w/ my favorite chapter. anyhow, this one really ramps up the political intrigue, while also giving a point of view for theon, probably my most reviled character. so meh to theon, but the rest of the book rocks. my favorite point of views: bran, arya, catelyn, tyrion, and sansa. i'm torn about the catelyn one: i dislike the character, but she's present for some fascinating developments. again, not for the faint of heart. the good guy doesn't usually win.
