The entire "Wisdom of..." series is well written, well researched, and worth reading.

Call me egotistical, but this book is the best representation of me ever. If I was poorer, and living in this city at that time, I would be Knut Hamsun. That above comment isn't very much like me, or Knut Hamsun for that matter, but I am wasting a lot of time these days trying to fill in a review for all the books on my list so please forgive me. What I especially enjoyed in this book was the free-flowing of the character, the randomness of his actions. One of the funnier scenes sees him jumping into a cab and pretending to be in a hurry to go somewhere, then arriving at a random spot and taking up a room there. This is a dead-on portrayal of a man trapped within in his own mind and his own fancy, determined to make something of himself but failing at it, and wasting a lot of time in the process. The ending is entirely unbelievable, and yet it is the only ending to which the journey could lead. What future imitators such as Bukowski fail to grasp is the loneliness, the humanity, the earnest self-conscious hypocrisy, and yet the potential for irrational purposeful hope that makes up the soul of this character.

A no-holes-barred look at the machievellianism that informed Lenin's decision-making.
Beautiful. Absolutely, disgustingly beautiful.

A very forthright, crude re-telling of the adventures of Isaac, Jacob, Joseph and their families. It can open your eyes to the messiness that is life with God. The people in the Bible are not saints, and their lives were not rainbow-colored picture books, but smelly, messy, sinful bumblings. Although I have liked other fictional incarnations of Bible stories better (like The Robe by Lloyd Douglas!), this book was thought-provoking especially since we are reading Genesis in Sunday School.
An entertaining literary thriller set before and during WW II. Not as good as to other excellent books by Boyd : The Blue Afternoon and Brazzaville Beach.
Reviewed by Breanna F. for TeensReadToo.com 15-year-old Mackenzie Hill is still recovering from the loss of her mother when her father announces that they're moving to Israel because he was offered a position at a university there. Being torn away from the only home she has ever known in Toronto, Canada, is not Mackenzie's idea of a good time. Her father promises that if after three months she still doesn't like it there, she can move back to Canada, and she plans to do just that. But soon Mackenzie meets an American girl named Marla who has lived in Israel for a few years. They discover that they have something in common, and she helps to show Mackenzie around. In no time at all, the two become best friends. Also, Mackenzie discovers an amazingly cute boy named Nasir who works at a little shop near her apartment. Soon (even though Nasir's parents would forbid it if they knew) Mackenzie and Nasir start dating, little to the knowledge of Mackenzie's father and Nasir's parents. Soon the three-month period is up - and Mackenzie doesn't mention going back home. Things are going so well and Mackenzie is actually happy with her life. But one day something happens that will quickly change everything.. First off, I have to say that this book was pretty intense. There was indeed a point where I cried. The whole book moved at a pretty fast speed, and near the end it was action-packed, which was a surprise (but it was a good surprise). Not one part of MACKENZIE, LOST AND FOUND was dull to me. After the first few chapters of just Mackenzie talking it switches, and most every other chapter after that is a chapter told from Nasir's point of view. So the story is told from two different points of view, which I always like. Ms. Kerbel is a strong writer and I definitely look forward to reading something else by her. I'd recommend this book to anyone who's interested in what's going on in the Middle East, and to readers who don't mind a heart-wrenching story.

I liked this book even though it was pretty juvenile. I heard it was as good as Harry Potter. I don't agree but it was still a fun read and interesting story.

I'm not sure what to say about this. The prose felt like you were caught in a sparring match with a boxer way above your caliber, headaches happened, and some of the passages are difficult to get through. This isn't because Ellroy is a bad writer. Ellroy is one of the best writers of crime fiction I've ever read. His characters are unlikeable, but you like them, his plots are perverse, but you enjoy seeing his characters fight through them. It's anything but a period piece, but it captures the air of late fifties LA in an amazing way. It's the world of the beatniks and mafiosos, from a strictly anti-romantic perspective. It was painful, sad, and I hope real life was nothing like that. I'm looking forward to reading more.

Cheever, John. FALCONER. (1977). ****. This was a re-read of a book I first read when it came out over thirty years ago. When I was reading the recent biography of Cheever by Blake Bailey, I was amazed at the praise heaped on this novel. I didn’t remember it as being all that great – at least not next to most of Cheever’s earlier work. So...I read it again. It’s not as good as his early work, though it is well written. I think all the hullabaloo was caused by the subject matter, which was very different from Cheever’s early stuff. It also contains lots of sexual passages, many of them homosexual – a topic that still had the ability to shock back then. Falconer is a prison. We don’t know where it is, but we can surmise that it is somewhere in New York state. A recent inmate is Farragut, a reasonably successful businessman and family man who has been interred for killing his brother. His claim is that he hit his brother once with a poker, who then fell down and hit his head on a corner of the fireplace. We don’t know for sure. At his trial he was accused of hitting his brother about twenty-two times. Farragut is also a heroin addict, and undergoes methadone treatment in prison. He knows he would kill for his daily fix, but is surprised when they tell him that he is clean: they have been giving him placebos for over a month. He’s in a cell block with a bunch of unusual characters, whose stories we learn over the course of the novel. Farragut does fall in love with one of the inmates, and their sexual encounters are provided in a semi-graphic way. His partner manages to escape from Falconer through an ingeneous plot – which is probably one of the best parts of the book. How it all ends is unanticipated, so I can’t share that without ruining the novel for you. You’ll just have to read it. Recommended.
