I read this when I moved away and tried to live in Portland. it was a fitting time for me to read it, mostly because Nouwen touched on the subject of Home and where we find a place of belonging and love.
saw the disconcerting ant-authority bent of the early Revolution as well as British authorities who regarded themselves as Americans and traced roots as far back as anyone on the Patriot side. Still, author is honest about the Crown's myopia and mistakes at certain points. The interrelation of the Boston/Harvard elite before the fissure of Revolutionary events occurred is most interesting.
I enjoyed reading this well written story. The characters are ones that you can care about, they make you want everything to work out for them. Owen Russell is in deep trouble. In order to save his aunt from poverty due to a bad gambling problem his uncle had, he wins back the money from the group of gamblers and returns it to her. Realizing that they want to kill him, he flees from Louisiana to Nebraska where he runs into the sheriff who mistakes him for Irving Spencer who signed up to be his deputy. Owen decides that this beats death because there are Wanted posters all over the place seeking his arrest. So he plays along and pretends to be Irving. What he doesn't realize is that Irving agreed to marry Jenny Larson. One look at her tells him that she is beautiful, so he agrees to marry her. But what will he do when the real Irving shows up?
A different book for David Baldacci. Always guaranteed a good read from him and I especially like the ones that take a different turn from the thriller's. I liked "Wish You Well" more, but will still recommend this one, too. I listened to this book, read by Ron McLarty and Orlagh Cassidy who have read other Baldacci books.
Another one that became tired and boring. I didn't like the writing style and even though this is inconsequential, I was bothered by not knowing when this story took place. Was it during modern times? The 1700's? I could not tell, and little things like that really bother me. Damn shame too, this got great reviews.
