I have been trying to pick up more contemporary books this year. It seems that all of them have been about dealing with death. So far this is the one I would recommend to my friends. I felt that this book dealt more with the relationships between people after a tragic loss. Although we follow the story of Laurel, this story incorporates how differently people deal with the loss of loved ones. Laurel's way of dealing is different than David's and her grandmothers. I have read reviews on this book and find people saying that nothing happens. It really is not a story with a lot going on. It is a story about growth, loss and life. The interactions between people and even how pets can help with loneliness. The human need to have something or someone to care for. Looking to others for strength and that sometimes moving on is a very slow process with baby steps. A huge part of the story is also forgiveness. In situations like this that you want to blame others for what has happened. Even if others are responsible there is a degree of forgiveness that must be given to be able to move on. I found this story deeper and better to understand than others I have read previously. Even though there is not a lot of things happening, I felt much more connected to these characters and even though I have not had any tragedies in my life, I felt that I could understand what they were going through. Even without added elements of too much drama, ghosts or teenage angst. This story was real for me and touched more to my style of contemporary novels. I was about to give up hope on continuing to find contemporary stories to read, but I really did enjoy this one.

Văn Hóa Trung Hoa Trong Các Con Số Thư viện Sách hướng dẫn

The description of this book (even the paragraph here at Goodreads) is misleading... Yes, Grace is a rocket scientist. Yes, she meets Grey, transported from 12th century Scotland 4 years earlier, on a plane. Yes, the tiny prop job plane does crash. BUT... Grace has a baby with her, and the crash happens only a few miles away from home and help. The entire book isn't really about Grey and Grace trying to survive the crash and a wintry storm... it's about whether Grey and Grace are true matches, whether they can recognize it, whether they can bridge the gap in centuries and male-female relationships, and whether Grace can give her sister's baby to his true father, a blood-feud sworn enemy of Grey. This book can be a good read, if you're in the mood to allow quite a bit of suspension of belief and just want a fun romance with a sexy 12th century Highlander. But if you try to analyze it at all, the book either gets confusing or just plain falls apart. I'm giving it 3 stars because: 1. Grey is a sexy, alpha-male Highlander who's learned to mostly become a modern male. 2. It was a fun read. 3. It was very late when I finished the book. Will I read on in the series? Not sure. The problem is that my local library doesn't carry this series, and I'm not sure that I want to purchase another book, Kindle or otherwise, to see if the series is worth reading. Here are my thoughts about this book: SPOILERS AHEAD (view spoiler) Cynical? Yes, I'm afraid by the light of day, I am. But if you read the book as I originally did, being willing to go with the flow and suspend a lot of questions and disbelief, it's a fun read.

You can also see this review at Afternoon Book Party I fell so in love with this story. Let me first say that this was my first venture in anything remotely science fiction. Seeing this label made me hesitant to pick up this book because I wasn't sure if I'd be into the genre or not. As it turns out, Across the Universe is one of my favorite reads so far this year. This story had me going, 'What the heck is happening?!" the whole time, but in a seriously good way, not in the bad, lost kind of way. For a person not used to science fiction, this had so many surprises and twists and interesting details. It's also an extremely quick read. I got through it in just a few hours; a definite page turner. I was so into this book and something was always happening or leading up to something else making it was extremely difficult to put down without reading one more chapter, then one more, then one more... Of course, great writing and great characters. The author uses dual-perspective alternating between Amy, a "technical" new-comer to the ship and Elder, who grew up on the ship. This worked excellently giving different views about the things going on allowing the reader to learn so much more. I loved the characters that were meant to be loved and hated the ones meant to be hated. It was interesting going on Amy's journey as she wakes up in an entirely different world. I definitely look forward to reading the second book in the series.

Tô Màu Thần Tiên - Tập 1 Thư viện Sách hướng dẫn

This review was originally posted on my blog and has bee edited slightly. This was the second book in the series, I hadn’t read the first when I started this, but while I’m sure it would’ve filled in more of the background of the story, Wild Desire was okay as a standalone read. That being said, I’m now going to go back and read the first one, (Wild Heart). This was a lot of fun, kind of what you might get if you crossed Indiana Jones with a romance novel. Lots of swashbuckling adventure and swoony romance. I liked both of the characters, they were well developed. Bea isn’t your typical shrinking violet, she’s innocent about much of what goes on in the world, but at the same time she wants to get out there and have adventures. I enjoyed her headstrong nature and her pluckiness. She was a fun character to get to know. Colin is rather lovely as well, a little bit anti-hero, in the beginning he’s more interested in finding the treasure he’s after. But as the story progresses and Bea and Colin grow closer his priorities change. He’s very much the ‘man’, cocky, stubborn and he quite likes to push Bea’s buttons. I love when the two of them first meet - he’s rolling drunk and she’s buck nekkid! The main characters have great chemistry together and I really enjoyed the way they bounced off one another, whether it was in teasing or flirting. Both characters have been hurt in the past, so it was great to see them deal with what held them back and move forward in their relationship. I started this on the plane heading to ARRC2011 and I spent the whole plane trip cackling like a crazy lady – all signs of a good book in my mind. There’s lots of lovely tension between the couple, one scene that springs to mind is when Colin and Bea get caught up in a street riot, and Colin has to cut Bea’s corset off – just mmm wow! Smoldering comes to mind and when their consummation scene finally comes around – hells bells, it was sexy, sweet and heartbreaking all at the same time. One thing I didn’t expect was the paranormal theme running through it and to be honest it doesn’t take over the whole story, it’s only hinted at in the beginning, if anything it added to the adventure and danger that Colin and Bea were in. It isn’t mentioned at all in the blurb and I only found out ahead of time because I’d read another bloggers review of the book. The paranormal element is explored through Colin’s back story as the novel progresses. I would assume if you were reading this after the first book, there would be more knowledge of the paranormal side of things, but as I said earlier, it doesn’t detract from the story as a standalone or if you’re reading them out of order. If you don’t usual read paranormal, this would be a great introduction to it. The story at its heart is a historical romance, but it has lots of adventure and the paranormal helps to complete the novel. The only thing I don’t think gelled was the use of some of the language, towards the end Colin swears – shit, I think – nothing too out there, but it didn’t seem to fit with the story and on occasion Bea used ‘British’ insults and it seemed that these were only used because the character was from England. Nobody else may think anything of this but I know as an Aussie, people think we talk like Alf from Home & Away – think gratuitous use of cobber, stone the flaming crows, maaate, or you could listen to any number of Kevin Rudd’s speeches – he used slang quite a bit. It kind of pulled me out of the story a bit, but it was the swearing more so. Overall, this was so much fun to read and I’m really looking forward to reading Wild Heart. It was a fun, easy read, perfect for my holiday and it really set the tone for my holiday – lots of fun and adventure. It’s a great historical romance and I really enjoyed the paranormal elements of the story.
