The understated pulse of Marai's narrative about two men encountering each other to talk -- or not talk -- about a wife's infidelity make me suspect he's a much more excellent writer than 'Embers' immediately makes evident. I could tell I was sitting with a master storyteller, but nothing in his prose captured my attention enough to make the novel memorable. I'd be happy to give him another chance, for sure.

Best-selling science fiction book of all time allegedly. I've wanted to read it for a long time, and I wasn't disappointed. A great messiah tale with deliberate pacing and interesting characters, combined with a weird mix of Islam, Hinduism, Zen, and Christianity.
A collection of essays in which David Mamet dissects what is wrong with the movie business and shares his very subjective views on his favourite and least favourite movies and actors. An insightful, often very funny, and brutally honest insider's look at Hollywood.
Looking for adventure, a young teacher takes the opportunity to teach at the new elementary school in Big Bend National Park in 1952. Her story of exploration, building friendships, and learning to live with wildlife is told through her letters to family and friends back east. Before reading Tenderfoot Teacher, a caution is in order: it was written at a time when many people--including park staff--didn't fully realize the importance of strict preservation in the national park. Some of the practices described in the book, such as feeding animals, collecting rocks and fossils and archaeological artifacts are extremely damaging to the resources of the park. Advice for dealing with rattlesnakes and mountain lions has also changed over the years. This was another winner for Sarah. I quickly was captivated with the characters. I love that she incorporates a little "twinkle" in her stories.

Funny story about the girl, Nancy, who gets very excited when she sees a new boy in her class who is from Paris. She uses her manners and knowledge of French words to be a good friend to him. I like the twist in the story, the boy is actually not form Paris, France, he is from Paris, Texas.

I usually like Minette Walters' books for some quick entertainment when I'm stressed. This book was ok - not spectacular but good enough - until I reached the sloppy, unsatisfying solution to the book. I had expected something intricate and surprising, all the stories ending in a neat resolution. The book, however, left me thinking "Wait, that was IT?!" and feel like I really wasted my time on reading it.

Didn't think I'd be interested in this...I'm not a kid person and this is all about parenting. But what a fun surprise - it was interesting, well-written and very funny. Makes you think--American kids are so coddled these days...no wonder everyone feels so entitled! While she may have been pretty extreme in her parenting, she was at least fully invested in those kids--she brought them into this world and she made damn sure she would give them every opportunity at what she thinks is a good life. Very quick read--and she even talks about raising their dog!
