Not a bad story, really, but Rachel Morgan has to be one of the most annoying UF heroines I've ever read. Since I find most UF heroines annoying as shit, that says a lot. Combine that with my unnerving fixation/hatred for the way the author structures her sentences (a personal peeve), and you can say I spent a lot of this book with my shoulders up around my ears, irritated. Anyway, not a bad story. A lot of filler, but I liked how the mystery was wrapped up and the conclusion. Once I get over my irritability, I look forward to book three.

I don't think I can ever look at a glass of water or my water bill the same again. Oh, how I appreciate the clean water that I can get right from my tap. I'll pay that quarterly bill with a little more thankful attitude. I found it fascinating that there were two camps (miasma and water born) arguing over the cause of cholera. Without modern day equipment it was difficult to pinpoint the cause of cholera as something that lives in water. It was also amazing to see how far science has come. I was surprised at the modern day inference that the author drew. The idea of a water born terrorism attack is frightening, but a possibility that we really need to be mindful of. It definately left me with something to think about. I may have given the book a 4, but I thought the author restated too many points. Because I listened to it as an audio version I kept having to check that I hadn't pushed the wrong button and went back tracks when I heard something that I had already heard.

I remember the film, (with a young Peter O'Toole. Am I right, or just imagining it?), but don't think I read the book. It is recommended in this Guardian article on isolated narrators.

At one point I thought I was really going to dislike this book, and maybe even not finish it. But I perservered, and it paid off. In the end, Willie’s story was nicely told. I’m coming to realize that of the latest Victorian era books, I like the ones where the main character is an outsider, trying to fit into the society and having trouble with it. (See also: The Vespertine and Haunting Violet.) SO much more interesting than the normal upper-class girl who rebels against Oppressive Society. [Oct. 2011]
it was the best manga serie ever!! manga+goth+vampire= i love it

I started this book at the end of April and finished it in mid-October. Don't let that fool you, though: the only real problem with this book is that it's too large and heavy to take on the train, and so (for someone like me, anyway) the only time to read it is at bedtime, when I can only get through four pages max before conking out, which is the only reason why it took almost six months of fairly regular reading to finish it. In terms of the content and the writing style, this book is a gem. This book explores the Tarim mummies, the extraordinarily well preserved mummies found in central Asia, many of whom are of a Caucasian physical type, and tries to figure out who these people were and what they were doing in Asia. It's a really well-written, well-organized, and in-depth look at the history, prehistory, cultures, textiles, archaeology, anthropology, burial practices, and languages of the region. The writers come at the topic from every possible angle to try to gather more information that could help to understand the mummies' identities. For the most part, the book is understandable at the layman's level. Mallory and Mair explain each topic clearly. My only comprehension problem was related to the length of time it took me to read the book; by the time I got up the late chapter on languages, I was four months away from my reading of the chapter on the groups of people who occupied these areas in the historical record, so I had a little trouble keeping the Andronovo and Afanasevo straight and remembering the characteristics of the Kucheans vs. the Saka and whether some of them might have been the same people. But if you read this book like a normal person in a reasonable amount of time, you should be okay there, although a few big maps in an appendix would have been a welcome addition. Overall, I really enjoyed the book and highly recommend it.

I thoroughly truly enjoyed this book. That being said, though it is very clear that it needs to be read in conjunction with its sequel "Dreams of Joy". I intend to read that story and then come back and do a review of both the stories. That is the only reason I'm rating it as 3 stars for now. I know the story isn't yet finished...
I havent read it but it sounds good :)
