I debated about the rating to give this book. On one hand- 3 stars; I Liked It. Which I certainly did. Or 4 stars; I really liked it. Which is a bit of a stretch. So I'm going to stick with a solid 3.5 stars. This is a fun read, though not without some problems, it's fairly light, fluffy, and entertaining. Great premise, interesting fantasy take on the Salem Witches, quickly paced, likeable heroine and supporting cast. Biggest downfall was the predictability; the 'twists' and reveals were not shocking, being a) fairly predictable anyway and b) indicated by the author to anyone who was paying any attention. I shied away from 4 stars because I probably would not read it again, but I would check out other works by this author for fun summer reads.

The one got even weirder than the others, but was still interesting. The series is not the most captivating in the world--I probably remembered nothing of the latter two books because I probably only read them once--but there was nothing really wrong with them. They're all a good diversion, if that's the type of book you're looking for (I reread them while I was sick on the couch one day and it was plenty satisfactory for me). One great thing, however: even though the protagonists tell each other they love each other and live alone in the wilderness (with their dragons, as refugees), etc., there is never ANYTHING inappropriate in their relationship. They kiss a couple of times. Literally: "and she kissed him" is as far as it ever went. Kudos to Jane Yolen for keeping it clean. That is ALWAYS appreciated.

Oh, how many times did I cry while reading this book?? I originally read this in Sept. 2002, according to my trusty book journal. I loved it then and I love it now. It's lusty and beautiful and funny and sad. Sure, Kingsolver can get a little preachy, but hey, in my opinion the world would be a little better place if we all took lessons from Ms. Kingsolver on biology and wildlife conservation!

I thought I had read this, but I think I was mistaken. It was wonderful and I'm glad I read it now.

Mashing together polygamous sister wives, "Hunger Games" dystopia, and Jane Austen tales where the dramas of characters are pretty much confined to one sprawling estate, I loved this one. Although the premise is a little extreme and tricky to understand at first (in the future, all women of a particular generation die at 20 and all men at 25), once the characters end up in a dilapidated mansion where there are sister wives, a mysterious basement, a confusing husband, and a cute servant boy, I was hooked. I'm a little wary of future sequels because I really liked the spatial confines of this one (kind of similar to most of the action unfolding in the Hunger Games arena) but I guess we'll see what will happen in any future Chemical Garden book. The cover was impressive and the whole design of the book was interesting, although it sort of made the book seem like more of a high fashion book that would be dropping brand names instead of an inventive scifi YA.

I often try to read two books at the same time on a subject or related subjects. I find that the double perspective helps the learning process. In some instances, each book complements the other. In other instances, one book clearly does a better job. Here, Peter Saccio succeeds in producing a much more readable and effective study of the historical background to Shakespeare's history plays than did Lord Norwich in his version that I reviewed recently. If you only have time for one, chose this one.

There are so many sad realities that make up this young pediatrician's life. She describes her work so honestly and in such detail that not enough of her warmth and compassion shine through. I would welcome the chance to read this same book written when the author is 10 years into her career.
