Yes, I know. I finally read this book. I actually liked it quite a bit more than I thought I would. After everything I'd heard about it, I was expecting to not like it at all and have a really difficult time getting through it. But I found it pretty easy to read and an interesting future world that, fortunately, didn't happen. No deep insights from me, but I am sorry I didn't pick it up sooner.

This book was just SO well-written. Even when I might have otherwise been bored by what was going on in the hands of a lesser writer, the characters were so alive that I was still engaged. Seriously, this world is so fleshed-out it's ridiculous. I have rarely encountered a book with such a vibrant and real world, with strange but absolutely believable characters. I would recommend this book to anyone.
A tale of mystery and emotion quite nicely written. The ending was artfully done. Loved the book. Good read....
Set in Edinburgh, a mystery with Isabel Dalhousie as the sleuth. Not as enjoyable as his Ladies #1 Detective Agency series.

** spoiler alert ** This book was much better than the previous Old Republic novel. This story hit the right chords at the right time and didn't leave the reader with unanswered questions. It was an exciting, action packed, and heart-felt story. The most interesting element of the story was that the reader was given a peek at the human side of a Sith Lord and the inhumane capabilities of a Jedi. It was an Anakin Skywalker-esque, story, told from two character's perspectives, where one can really feel for the "bad guy's" dilemma and see why the "good guy" would go bad. Paul S. Kemp successfully defibrillated this series, whose beginning was ravaged and left for dead by Sean Williams, and now I cannot wait for Drew Karpyshyn's follow-up to complete the trilogy.

I don't think this is the edition that we had at home when I was a child. But I never saw the dustcover on that one, so I can't be sure. My mother used to read this book every Christmas Eve, doing all the voices, sound effects, and all. I remember this as the canonical version, and whenever I see a dramatization, I automatically compare it to my mother's rendition. Most fall short. Dickens was writing in a time when people read serialized stories aloud around the hearth at night. He crammed his stories with copious detail, down to the odd notion of a miser having more than one dressing gown. Even short ones like this have detail that I look for in vain in film versions. From the very start where Dickens questions why a door-nail should be considered particularly dead, through the emergence of the starveling, filthy children Ignorance and Want from the skirts of the Spirit of Christmas Present, to the very end, most (probably all) of the movie versions drop details even as window dressing. Even the Muppet version misses one or two, though it's more true to the original than many (ok, the rat bookkeepers singing "This Is My Island in The Sun..." in apology for complaining that their pens are inksickles is a bit of a liberty...but I'm sure Dickens would have included it if he'd thought of it.)
This book was recommended to me several years ago, and I finally got around to reading it. I'm only sorry it took me so long -- it's an exceptional work that's about basketball and so much more.
I really liked this book. It flows quickly and is very readable. Lehane is quite a talented author. The story is set off the coast of Boston, in 1952, in an island insane asylum. This mystery unfolds well and has several layers.
