It took me about 100 pages to get into, mostly because there are too many chapters where the plot stalls and the narrator complains about her life. Ultimately, though, the book grew on me.

Stress perkotaan dicoba diuraikan oleh DK Halim dalam buku Psikologi Lingkungan Perkotaan. DK Halim, seorang arsitek yang kemudian mendalami ilmu psikologi, melihat bahwa stress perkotaan tidak hanya disebabkan oleh kondisi personal seseorang tetapi juga karena kondisi dan fasilitas kota yang tidak bersahabat. Umumnya kota-kota di Indonesia tidak dilengkapi dengan sarana dan prasarana yang memberi kenyamanan psikologis perkotaan bagi warga kota. Bahkan sangat jarang (mungkin tidak ada) kota yang dirancang dengan mempertimbangkan faktor psikologis warga kota. Padahal sebagai manusia, warga kota membutuhkan pemenuhan kebutuhan psikologis yang tersedia dalam sarana dan prasarana kota. Tengoklah sistem dan design fasilitas lalulintas perkotaan. Nampaknya faktor psikologi warga kota luput dari pertimbangan design dan operasionalisasi sarana dan prasarana lalu lintas. Kemacetan lalu lintas ditengarai sebagai salah satu penyebab stress perkotaan. Adakah fasilitas yang “by design” bisa mengurangi stress perkotaan pada sistem lalu lintas ?. Berbagai faktor penyebab stress perkotaan diuraikan oleh DK Halim. Selain aspek lalu lintas, faktor lain yang dicermati adalah perumahan kota, fasilitas bagi warga senior kota (lansia), polusi udara, dan tentu saja tata ruang dan landsekap kota. Sebagai psikolog, uraian DK Halim, dalam buku itu membuka mata kita bahwa “rancangan teknis” tidak cukup untuk memenuhi kebutuhan psikologi warga kota. Sayangnya Psikologi Lingkungan Perkotaan belum menjelaskan, cara penyelesaian stress perkotaan. Buku ini tidak menguraikan bagaimana menyelesaikan permasalahan kota dari sudut pandang psikologi perkotaan. Penyebab diuraikan secara panjang lebar, how to solve the problems, belum ada disana.
