The author did several things really well with this book. The relationships between parents and children (Midwestern vs. East Coast) and the relationship between the siblings was vivid. There were several things that made me chuckle, such as the stereotypes of the Midwest (which had to come from somewhere....) ;) The endearing things about the Midwest are captured as well to balance it out. One thing this book makes clear is how specific choices can shape not only your life's direction, but those of your loved ones as well.

Thinly veiled memoir, but enjoyable. I always like reading about how much a family of religious zealots can mess up a kid ... and how sometimes a kid can recover. I liked Winderson's THE PASSION much more that this book, however.

This was good. I enjoyed it and Tyson was a good twist.I'm still sad Luke's gone dark side but what can you do? I also really liked the water horses and the many pegasuses. :D

This was a fun, quick read. Kind of like "Julie and Julia" meets "Sex and the City." Nothing really thought-provoking, but it was entertaining.

In the fifth Lady Julia novel, there is another mystery involving the eccentric March family-this time Julia's older brother, Lord Bellmont, has an indiscretion that, because of his position, could have far-reaching consequences. Reluctantly, Brisbane's inquiry services are requested. His investigation begins without his wife's knowledge, but soon her curiosity has her smack in the middle of everything. While Brisbane is awed by his wife's intellect, he remains worried about her lack of experience in dealing with the dangerous situations that his investigations often lead to (although she has been in ‘training’ since the last book). Unexpected connections are made during the inquiry for both Nicholas and Julia. The couple also remains on the cutting edge of technology (a telephone is installed in the home and office) and fashion (well, at least for Julia). Nicholas and Julia remain enchanted with each other, but they are still coming into their own as 'partners' and discovering what exactly that means to each of them. The author continues to do a great job of balancing the romance of the Brisbanes with the investigation. The mystery itself is different from the previous Lady Julia books in that the scope of the investigation is much larger— Likewise, the latest book has the Brisbanes setting off in a new direction and I hope that points to the potential for more novels in the series.

Sure, lots of the stuff in this book isn't ground breaking, and most people probably are aware of many of the key strategies that the book mentions; however, I still think it does a great job of laying the framework, and giving people a path to follow to become better negotiators. In the end though, as the book says, it will all come down to practice.

Elizabeth Bishop wrote some of the most beautiful poems that I have ever read. Travel is an important theme in her writings, and I can certainly identify with her commentary on a nomadic lifestyle. The poem "One Art" is about losing - losing places you used to live, losing people, losing your memory. I doubt I'll ever find a piece of writing that better explains how it feels to deal with constant loss.

I could not put this book down. The emotional development of the main character, Eve Duncan, hooked me more than the mystery itself though the ending took me completely by surprise. This was definitely a fun read.
