Bloody Mary is a fast-paced enjoyable read. The sequel to Whiskey Sour has Jack Daniels back in action. Jack is tracking a gruesome killer who is leaving extra body parts in the county morgue. Unfortunately, these body parts are carrying souvenirs that tie back to Jack putting her under threat once again. With her partner Herb, who is in the midst of a midlife crisis, Jack must hunt down this vicious killer while balancing her increasingly hectic life. Jack's mother has been hurt in a fall and comes to town with Jack's ex-husband Alan. Latham, her boyfriend, has just asked her to move in with him and now she must weigh her feelings for the two men in her life. Insomnia is rearing it's ugly head and time seems to be running out. For Jack, life has never been crazier and we are along for the ride. This book was even better than the first in the series. I couldn't put it down. Jack was given real flaws and her true personality began to shine through. With all of the drama surrounding her, she became lovable and her small weaknesses made her easy to connect with. Herb was back but his role as partner changed making the dynamics of the story different from the first book. With a midlife crisis going on, Herb is no longer the teddy bear. He turns into a grizzly and makes things difficult. This change in Herb makes the story more enticing because I was left wondering if Jack and Herb would be able to function as true partners again. Jack's mother, Mary, also has a more pronounced role in the book. She is a strong-willed woman and her banter with Jack gives us new insight into Jack's behavior. The plot of Bloody Mary moves along quickly and new developments in the search for the killer are revealed at the end of nearly every chapter. The ending had an unexpected twist leaving a bit of the storyline open. I can't wait to read Rusty Nail, the third book in this series. Once again, Jack Daniels goes down smooth.

A follow-up to I Was a Really Good Mom Until I Had Kids. My only complaint is it was too short. I could use a little more.

Maybe this isn't how others use this site, but I partly want to use it to record books I *don't* want to read and why not, so I can remember next time it comes up. For this one: long long, many bad reviews, england, period, church. Only epic novel by this author, sounds like the length was too much. On the other hand, thousands gave it 5 stars; but for me, we'll (probably not) see..

There is no doubting that Kipper is a cute dog, and there is nothing like home!
Dugout comes with a CD of Allen's live performance, but it would still be an interesting read without. This book is straight-up Americana - from baseball to jazz to alcoholism to installation art (with some Dada-meets-modernist...in my ignorant estimation) photos thrown in for good measure - told in off-beat, often first-person narrative. A quick and enjoyable read, I would say this book should be read first without the accompaniment of the CD, and then savored with.
A F. recomenda :)

I thought the book was going to be about the Gospel of Thomas, but it is really an overview of early Christianity tied in with Elaine Pagels personal search for something to make sense of the world. Written in plain language, it covers a lot of territory and shows how the beliefs of some groups were crowded out of orthodox Christianity. As always, the most ruthless win. The main investigation of the book is how to tell the difference between divinely inspired texts and those that are human imagination. She doesn't touch on the work of scholars who believe that the Gospel of John was originally written more sypathetically to the Gospel of Thomas, but that a later Redactor added the opening chapters and inserted additional material to change the perspective to refute Thomas.
