Great book. The ending was very predictable but it was the getting there that was fun.

I believe this was summer reading. I'm not sure. I do know that it was for my American literature class in high school, so it was either just before or during my sophomore year. I remember liking the love story and I watched the Liam Neissen movie shortly after reading it one afternoon at Jenn Mabius's house. Last year I did an awesome project with this book. I had the students read this book and several other stories and poems about winter. Then I had them take pictures of their Maine winter surroundings. They chose the three best pictures, and wrote up how those pictures connected to the readings. Most of them really liked the project and I got some awesome work.

4.5 stars. Very good fantasy m/m story about a man who wakes up in the afterlife, with no memory of his prior life, and, with the help of a cryptic guide, begins a journey to recover his memories and make his peace with the significant people from his life.

Steinhauer, Olen. THE TOURIST. (2009). ****1/2. There’s been lots of buzz about this new novel from this author; about it’s being a re-introduction to the world of espionage fiction as practiced by the masters in their early days. Names like Le Carre, Deighton, and Graham Greene have been bandied about. I have to give it its due. It is well written and has an interesting plot. What it really turns out to be, however, is an espionage novel using some of the standard ingredients of early noir fiction. OK. I can take that. It’s the story of a “tourist,’ i.e., a spy who also does wet work. The lead character is Milo Weaver, a CIA agent, who has recently retired from active duty and is now at a desk at the CIA offices in NYC. From his last encounter with the bad guys, he managed to meet a woman who was to become his wife. The fact that he met her in the middle of a shoot-out while she was going into labor in front of one of the palazzos in Venice inhabited by a Russian pedophile who kills his thirteen-year-old “ward” by throwing her over the balcony to the cobblestones below gives them a lot in common. Their relationship deepens when they end up in the same Venetian hospital; her for her delivery, him for treatment of two bullet wounds. Marital bliss, however, is not to be, because Milo is being set up. Bodies pile up and all the clues seem to point to him as the perpetrator. Lots of foreign spies are involved, too, if you can keep them all straight. It seems that spies everywhere have at least five different identities, and they use them almost interchangeable in the story. In spite of not knowing which of his co-workers to trust, Milo finally discovers the source of all his troubles in a twisting ending. Wouldn’t you know it: you can’t trust anyone anymore. Recommended.

Finally, a great book to recommend to Harry Potter fans that doesn't try to imitate HP. I read this aloud to my two boys...and my older son who loves fantasy read the sequel himself.

This well-written story was a little too close to home for me. I imagined myself losing parts of myself and not getting them back. It was a good read and I was, in the end, glad I had the opportunity to read it.

Maybe it's because I read this in one late night sitting but I enjoyed this book. Sort of chick-lit, first person confessional style, it follows one woman's attempt to come to terms with her life. When her mother's diagnosed with breast cancer, she takes a look at her life and makes some changes. She's been running away from life before it can abandon her. She starts facing up to her past and you're left with optimism for her future. It's fast-paced and funny. Nothing earth shattering, but if you're in the mood, it's worth the read.
