I want to post a nice, glowing review of Feed, because it's such a great concept. It's a dystopia that's not all that far-fetched: we all have feeds linked to our brains that are basically like the semantic web that's currently being developed. There are references to common post-modernistic thoughts: we are free to choose whatever we want from a selection of choices determined by someone else. But M.T. Anderson misses something along the way. I wish I could place exactly what is missing. I think, more than anything, the plot just moves along without really putting things together. Maybe that makes it more realistic: things just happen, as things are wont to do. But I wanted more from this book. Being a National Book Award finalist carries some heavy weight to it. But I just couldn't get myself into this one as much as I wanted to. The language is tough, too. Not the cursing (though there is a lot of that) -- the way the narrator speaks. It's supposed to be evident of the times (and there is a brief reference to language dying), but it just seems too simplistic, too dumbed-down, and not genuine. The narrator writes in this stupid-sounding way, but most dialogue in the book doesn't follow the same pattern. It doesn't seem real. After thinking about all this, though, I like the story. I just want it to be more. . .I don't know. Epic. But perhaps that's the point. We're not fighting these epic battles against those controlling us. We're just going along, letting things happen. As things are wont to do.
