Audio book I have found that I can't listen to "real" literature while I'm cleaning, etc. My solution is to listen to books like this one. I can follow them without paying too much attention, and still get some work done. Nothing exceptional, just a murder/mystery...

haha, yea I know. sacks is one of those authors, like gawande, that are so hyped by people in medicine that of course it fell short of expectation. I guess I didn't think it was that funny...but at least we have one author we love equally :)

You might find an interview with Berman somewhere on the web, as I did, in which he states that in assembling Actual Air he collected all his interesting ones and frontloaded the thing with all his best work. This is pretty much true, except for...you know, some exceptions. There's some reaching for a taste of real greatness in those few beginning poems - stately lines that oscillate between two emotions. Wry, sad, funny. Berman has a beautiful feel for characters down on their luck, characters you and I can identify with, characters who shyly turn their face away. He's lyrical about the beauty of the South and heavy metal and divorcees and the nightmarescapes of back pain. And then there are his weaker moments, which is why I can't quite give Berman five stars: he's got a fatal penchant for mixing inscrutable political theory into an otherwise fine poem - words like "municipal" and "judiciary" slide like a film over the lucidity. Well whatever, you say, and move on to the next line. And then later on you realize, Oh, that must have been about disillusionment.

I enjoyed this book as a good, light summer read, and especially appreciated the ending twist. My wife hated it, however, which caused sizable cosmic dissonance in our little universe. I have been musing ever since that this book is more appreciated by people who like cats.
