This is a brilliantly clever book that is brilliantly written; it spawned a whole new genre of disaster tales. The most memorable part for me was description of the relationship between Marquesa de Montemayor and her daughter, so droll but most vividly felt: "Any Spanish schoolboy is required to know today more about Doña María, Marquesa de Montemayor, than Brother Juniper was to discover in years of research. Within a century of her death her letters had become one of the monuments of Spanish literature and her life and times have ever since been the object of long studies..."

I liked the storyline about the 15 yr. old twins Sophie and Josh as they stumble into the world between good and evil, which depicts modern and old world, immortals, and demons. I could not put the book down and now can't wait to read the sequel; the Magician. I need to know what happpens to all the characters as the 1st book leaves you hanging.

I had to see what all the fuss was about. My 12 year old students talk about it constantly. I literally cringed at the writing but could not stop turning the pages. And then I crept down to the library and got the next one. Hurts so good.

I enjoyed this book. The stories were engaging & it was interesting to look into such a shut off country. I found the section on defectors living in South Korea especially interesting, how they learn to fit in, their struggles and how the Sth Korean government helps them. I did find it a little confiding in parts since it jumps around a bit. My main problem with this book is that it's repetitive. It's a short book but the author repeats really basic things over and over. For example she mentions about 4 times that rice is the staple food of Korea, 1) I already assumed it was & 2) you mentioned it 50 pages ago, I didn't forget.

** spoiler alert ** For me this was the worst of the Twilight books, I thought it was so drawn out, it could have been written in 400 pages rather than the 700+. For me as soon as the whole pregnancy story started I knew I wouldn't like it. It was bad enough that Bella practically forced Edward to have sex with her but for her to get pregnant aswell - unbelievable. I also thought the author could have done so much more with the whole Bella and Jacob storyline, in the previous books there had been so much sexual tension between the two then in this one it seems to have vanished! And don't get me started on Jacob imprinting on the baby, he'd have been better off getting paired with Leah. The ending for me was also a big anti-climax, there could have at least been some sort of fight, instead of everyone just talking things over and walking away, I didn't read 700 pages for that to happen, I needed some sort of action. A disappointing finish to the saga.

It took me a while to get through this one, mostly because I wanted to retain every bit of information (an impossible task, given Haiti's insane political history). Not exactly uplifting, but important and well-written. I would certainly recommend to anyone looking to familiarize themselves with Haitian history and U.S./Haitian relations, two inextricable subjects.

I absolutely loved it. I know other people read it and wished they were illiterate. I just think it paints a fantastically accurate picture of the fine line between madness and passion. I'll admit the cholera part is nasty.
