Great exploration of the interplay and relationship between capital and the life-sciences. By far one of the best texts re-engaging Marx ... (did I mention he is on my committee.)

This book was ok, but it's not memorable. I had heard an interview with Melanie Benjamin and was interested in the story she had to tell about the woman who inspired the famous Alice in Wonderland, but this book did not live up to my expectations.

The reason this did not get five stars from me was the teacher stereotypes once again. The two teachers were straight out of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn: the old, sour, never smiles, hates her students teacher and the young, inspired, fine arts teacher that all the other teachers hate. Puleeze.

I really loved this book. Being a fan of U2's 90's output in particular, it was great to get a feel for where the band was creatively during this critical period in their career. You really get a feel for these four friends who just happen to be the biggest band in the world. You get to learn each band member's distinct personality, so much so that you feel as if you've known them your whole life. In a way, the book is almost too revealing - after reading End of the World, you can never really look at U2 the same way again; to their credit, each of the four seem to be up-standing folks.

I have no idea why this book came to mind, but it did. I remember the plot just well enough not to spoil it, and enough to remember how much I enjoyed it, even though at ten, I knew it wasn't terribly complex.

Oh so beautiful and bizzarre.... the plot makes no sense at all, the characters are utterly compelling and strange, the endless nonsequiturs. Loved it.

Alice feels lost ever since her mother died of cancer years before. The only solace she finds is in her boyfriend Blaze and in the music she writes and plays with her best friend Claire at church. Her father has remarried and they no longer cook and make up jingles together and her step mother is expecting a baby girl. Alice is not excited about her new half-sister. Then her life goes from bad to worse; Claire tells her that the church thinks Alice’s songs are too sad and they don’t want them to play and sing anymore. She and Claire stop talking and hanging out and Alice feels even more alone; thank God for Blaze but she even has some confusion about him. Then after her new sister is born, her dad tells her they are driving to California from their Seattle home to visit Victoria’s parents for Thanksgiving. Her dad is called away on business Thanksgiving night and Victoria, Alice, and Ivy make the return trip to Seattle. They wind up caught in a blizzard and Victoria’s and Alice’s icy relationship begins to thaw even as the temperature drops. When Victoria goes for help, Alice focuses on keeping Ivy alive and learns things about herself and her dead mother in the process. The story is told in poems that have an authentic teenage voice.

Very interesting read. There were a few lulls in the book, but always were worth powering through. Moving.

Loved loved loved this! Shannon Hale is becoming a favorite author; I thought The Princess Academy was also great. I'm so excited this is a trilogy and I get to keep reading!

I liked the book, but it ended too abruptly.
