These books are like fluffy, fun candy. Not particularly deep, but the I love the characters and find them very easy to relate to. I also adore the fact that the main character is in a stable marriage and not lusting after all the guys. Plus yay, more scenes of Kitty's radio show in this book.

I absolutely loved this sequel to "The Magicians." If you're a big fan of the Chronicles of Narnia or The Dark is Rising series, these books adopt the conventions of those novels then bends them. There are a lot of popular fantasy references Grossman throws in and if you don't recognize them, I think you'll miss a lot of the humor of this series. The plot and the characters often follow those fantasy books, but Grossman takes them to darker levels that, while they involve dryads and magical keys, still capture the depth of emotions of a literary novel.

Book Two of the Mortal Instruments trilogy was even better than the first book, for me. The various relationships between families, friends, and beyond are intertwined in very interesting ways, and Cassandra Clare handles them well. The plot of this series is really convoluted, with all KINDS of drama and craziness, and yet it all seems to make sense and flow well as I'm reading it. That's a major feat. I was feeling some of the major relationships more in this book than in City of Bones, and of course, Clare throws a lot of doubt into what we "know" so things could go in any direction. (I'm being intentionally vague so as to avoid spoilers.) One smaller note: all the manga references are cracking me up. On to book three!

Definitely one of my favorite books ever and I've only read it one time. I read it really quick and was just sort of dazed afterwards. Couldn't stop thinking about it.

Fuck! Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck. Thanks a lot, man! You and your fancy book just had to go and wake Immanuel Kant from his "dogmatic slumber", didn't you? And every single fucking time I pick up a philosophical tome like Critique of Pure Reason I have to be reminded of how lazy I am for not thoroughly reading through all of the British empiricists. Don't get me wrong, from what I've read of yours, you seem like a very precise philosopher, but now I have to read you with scorn. Look at what you're doing to me. None of my Goodreads friends are going to want to play with me anymore. "Hey, it's Jimmy's page, that pretentious dickhead who really thinks he can try reading five books at once, what an asshole." This isn't my fault David, it's yours. You and your fuckin age o reason! I'm sorry, I love you.

This really helped me understand how to draw different moods better. ^-^
Many thanks to Alisa for encouraging me not to give up on this book! Admittedly, the beginning is a bit drawn out with descriptions of propriety and society, but the end of the book more than makes up for that. It still creeps me out that the principal love story is between two cousins, but I must understand that as part of societal differences and move on. I will continue to read more Austin, as long as she continues to make me laugh.
