Aisha is the newest Talon of the raptor Clan. She is not the strongest or the fastest but she has learned to use her wits to make up for this. Her first assignment is to protect Rhiannon, princess and heir to the throne. Aisha manages to avert several assassination attempts but can she win a war? I thoroughly enjoyed this book and that has a lot to do with Aisha and her charge, Rhiannon. These are two very strong, independent women, capable of making important decisions on their own, a nice change from all the Twilightesque heroines popping up lately who are incomplete without a man - preferably one who is both dangerous and unattainable. This is also a fast read with lots of action and a great storyline. So if you are looking for a well-crafted fantasy novel with a strong female lead, this one is definitely for you.

I read a biography of Mary Queen of Scots when I was a child and have been fascinated ever since. The Other Queen is actually Elizabeth who usurped Mary's throne. Mary is the more direct descendant of Henry VIII being granddaughter of Henry's sister whereas Elizabeth is not a legitimate heir. The book chronicles the difficulties between the two queens and Elizabeth's imprisonment of her for 16 years with the Earl of Shrewsbury while deciding what to do with her. Ultimately, of course she is beheaded, but this focuses on the first 3 years of her captivity, the constant escape plots and the ruin of George Talbot. A great story of the protestant reformation in England.

The story was grim (and it's horrifying to think about this being a memoir rather than fiction) but ultimately hopeful. The graphic novel format was really effective. Evocative drawings kept me interested in something I might have put down had it just been text - it was an uncomfortable book to read, but the drawings kept it the worthwhile kind of uncomfortable rather than the creepy kind of uncomfortable.

Don't get it. This book was very well reviewed by a number of publications -- NYT, WSJ. So I ordered it from the library. It was so disappointing. There were a gazillion flash backs glued together by tedious descriptions and characters straight out of central casting. Think Ocean's Eleven. The heist scenes were fast paced, but otherwise the book was dreadfully boring.

The Discoverers by Daniel Boorstin, published in 1985, is a solid, thoroughly researched and well documented series of 82 essays on the history of human discovery. Some of these discoveries are physical, such as the New World or the trade route around Africa. Some of the discoveries are scientific such as the Calculus, the atom, or Evolution. For me, the book has two aspects that set it well above similar works on scientific history. That is, an exploration of how we discovered things that one might not normally think of as a discovery, such as the measurement of Time, or how did the idea of divisions in pre-history into Stone, Bronze and Iton ages develop. How did we start to measure Time? This is a fascinating subject and one in which Boorstin indulges enough space to make a decent foray into the subject. The other novel aspect of the book is the occasional discussion of "why not them?". Why didn't the Chinese or Islam invent the movable printing press? They had better and more advanced technologies in printing and in paper production long before the west, but it took Gutenberg to invent it. "Why not them" is at least as interesting (if not more) a subject than why Gutenberg did invent it. Even though 25 years has passed since its publication, the work does not seem to show its age as Boorstin's positions his text in a manner to transcend our current period. Many of these essays will be just as interesting to readers 50 or 100 years from now.
