I picked this book up because it was on sale, I love Nicholas Sparks, and the cover intrigued me (I used to have a dog that looked identical to the one on the cover) This was a great book. I'm not normall the type of person that cries a lot but Sparks has the power to make the tears flow!

This is a simply spellbinding child's tale that I will always cherish and read to my own children! In fact, this only cemented the thought that I would like to name my daughter Coraline. I've never been content with the simple happy-ending fairy tales that most of the world holds beloved. The darker the twists, the greater the peril, the more thrilling the reward. Everyone should read this and have it in their collection.

Years ago, there was a band called Culturcide that had a song called "Consider Museums as Concentration Camps". It was dedicated to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. The mysterious Clark Flood has written Clerk Fluid in a similar vein. This book is an attack on various parts of the Houston art scene. Many of the articles originally appeared as part of the Glasstire blog series "Objects in the Mirror". One point that is returned to many times is that artwork that is collected in museums is often an uninspired attempt to seem edgy. A related gripe is about how many of Houston's top corporate art sponsors such as Chevron, Halliburton and Kinder Morgan behave in the real world. There are also several places where Flood satirizes "how to" guides for artists, art show call for entries and non-profit mission statements. Flood's attitude towards museums in general can be gleaned from this quote: "I used to think that my work had some internal integrity that would persist whether it was hung in the lobby of the Museum of Modern Art or used as a urinal cake at Poison Girl [a Houston bar]. Now I understand that it would lose something very important if it were ever exhibited at MoMA." Specific people and institutions are referred to with unflattering nicknames. For example, the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston is referred to here as the "Center for Useless Mediocrity" amongst other things. The CAMH is mocked many times in Clerk Fluid. Flood yearns for the days when "the Center accidentally hired a radical director". I am not sure how funny or understandable these articles would be to non-Houstonians but it is certainly a different perspective from typical art writing.
I devoured the first two books in this series, only to be deisappointed by the third and final book in the trilogy. Pullman wove an faciful tale of the journey of very likable characters. However, his final book wrapped up the story too quickly and his creativity didn't match that of the first two books.

I have only dabbled in the work of Truman Capote but this book made me see why he should be considered an important voice of the 50 years. This book manages to create a sense of who the victims were, the town was, the investigators and the killers themselves--to the point that even though you know how it all ends you just want to see how they all get there. It's strong, heady and page turning.... It helped create a new genre of writing in it's time but is still the book to beat in that same genre. Beautiful turns of phrase, compassion of all of the people in the story and finally--just something unique. worth the read

An American goes to live and work in Beijing and ends up in a cheesy Chinese soap opera. Interesting for the insight it provides on what the Chinese think of Americans.

I'm tentatively giving 3 stars to part 1 and 4 stars to part 2, but it's hard to judge because the story isn't finished yet, so the story arc isn't done. The drawings are definitely 4-5 stars, they're so detailed, they're just beautiful. The hero is so awkward and forlorn that I felt for him, though he also needed a good kick in the pants. Now all depends on where this story ends up. The author cites Clowes as an influence, which bodes well.

This was a good read, although long, and there were times when my interest in it faded. By it's conclusion, though, I was pretty enthralled. The last third of the book makes it hard to put down. What at first seem to be conflicts within the text reveal themselves later as part of a grand tapestry. Lawrence definitely knew what he was doing, and there's tremendous complexity and depth behind sometimes simple prose.
