Beautiful drawings and a charming story. I had this book when I was small, and looking at it take me back to happy times of my Mom reading me the story. I buy it for my friends with new babies. I love reading it to children, they love the repitition of the fabulous name. Tikki-tikki-tembo-no-sa-rembo-cheri-beri-ruchi-pip-peri-pembo, it just flows off the tongue, doesn't it? I understand from reading on the web that some people are now down on the book because it is racist. I think that some people don't have enough outlets for their indignation. It may not be authentically Chinese, and it may not be an authentic folktake, but it's authentically good.

Synopsis: Terrorism for profit. In The Gambit, terrorist events are "engineered" to spike global oil markets for personal profit and political and strategic goals. The audacious manipulation of events soon spirals oil prices out of control, undermining economies and the reelection prospects of a U.S. president, co-opted by the actions of the conspiracy underway. A conspiracy led by a wealthy Saudi prince who has the goods on the occupant of the White House; a conspiracy operating under the cover of shadowy militant groups, seducing a Houston oilman to subjecting his own company to terrorist assault. Tipped off by a mysterious Lebanese banker, the U.S. mounts a furious effort to thwart the operation. But, it becomes eerily apparent that the President's first priority is to terminate the banker at all costs. Hastings, the top American intelligence official, acting against orders, desperately attempts to keep the banker alive long enough to understand the full dimensions of the treachery underway, culminating in the truth about the Prince and President dumped upon an unsuspecting electorate in the closing days of the election. The Gambit's wild ride through scheming oil traders, unstable markets, political blackmail, desperation and greed produces an uncomfortable premise: to what extent has the conspiracy already occurred?
I read this in 5th grade and I'll explore it again. It's pretty sad and i was a bit traumatized by it back then. There were so many great reviews about it, I'll revisit it again.
Very informative. Everyone who will eventually die, or, who will have loved ones die, should read this first.
I had read another John Updike book -- couples -- years ago and hated it, but I decided to give updike another try and glad I did. The character of Rabbit is such a bastard, but you love him so much. The main character is crazy misogyonistic though, so I can see how he might turn people off. I've heard that this is a book for guys more than gals.
The story was incredible, but the different language that was used by the characters in the book, made it a little harder to follow.

I wasn't sure how this would translate to audio format but I shouldn't have been worried. It was absolutely amazing. The voices were right on and some, like whoever did Batman, were flawless. GA's tagline is "like a movie in your mind" and this really did flow more like a movie than a dramatization of a story, even though there was narration and not all dialogue. The story was good, although you really have to pay attention in the beginning to understand what is going on. With an ensemble cast of characters, someone is bound to get shorted in the development area. If there was anyone here who got shorted, it might have been Wonder Woman. There was a little bit of characterization there, but certainly not as much as the boys. I enjoyed her parts, though. Aquaman came off as kind of a jerk. Batman too, although my love affair with him goes way back. I was always more Marvel than DC, so I'm less familiar with characters that didn't make their way past the pages of comics into other media. Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, Steel, etc. I liked getting to know more about them but I couldn't tell you if they were done well or not because my experience with them is so limited to begin with. Sometimes, as much as I have come to like audiobooks, listening to one person read to me is just not that interesting. This is a nice change of pace, and I really didn't see a downside to it at all. If you like action, this is probably something you're going to enjoy.

This is so hard to say. I am a huge Connie Willis fan from way back. I have always enjoyed her time travel books and stories. This was just to slow and in need of an edit. Blackout was great and ended so you had to pick up All Clear. I just could not find it in me to read this. I had to force myself to pick it up. Never a good sign.
