I picked this book up when Borders was going out of business. The story was decent but the tone was a bit too preachy for me. The book focuses on Mark Stone who has recently separated from his wife because he cheated on her. Stone grew up in a very religious family but fell away from the faith. He begins hearing horrific screams while talking to friends and family on the phone right before they meet their untimely demise which terrifies him. In the area he lives in, two women have been abducted and there are zero clues to aid in the investigation. The stories intertwine when Stone's estranged wife, Cheryl, is also abducted. His search for Cheryl and, ultimately, his quest for God also begin at this time. As I said, it was a decent story but the repent or perish theme was a bit much for me.

H.L. Hunley was the first submarine that sunk an enemy ship. Built by the Confederate South it sank mysteriously after it's first mission and was not seen again until 1995. This follows the know history of the submarine and then details the anthropologists discoveries when the submarine was recovered. Why I picked it up: Recommendations from other Youth Librarians and it was short. Why I finished: The audio was fantastic but I also pulled the book from the shelf to look at all the pictures. What a neat story.

I read this in the 1980s, so my memory is dim. I remember admiring Arendt for being one smart cookie. I also remember Eichmann as a tiny cog in a big machine and recognized the truism that all evil needs to prevail is for average (the quote is good) people to do nothing. "Just following orders."
