Right. So...I really liked this book quite a bit. Except that it really made me mad a lot of the time. I kept thinking, "Aw. Good. Now i can like the main charactor." And then he'd do something stupid again, and i'd be mad at him all over again. Totally stereotypical old Asian man. Gr. But. I really loved O-Lan. I'd love to read a whole book written from her point of view.

Moorcock has posited himself as the rebel of fantasy, sapping the high walls built by Howard and Tolkien. He is a well-spoken and thoughtful critic of the complete lack of romance in either of these would-be romances, but the love in Gloriana's court is anything but courtly. There is a delightful Quentin Crisp quote about how innovation is not 'seeing your neighbor to the left has a straight walk and your neighbor to the right a curved and thence making your own diagonal', suffice it to say that contrariness is not the mother of invention. Moorcock's Elric was, in many ways, written to be contrary; to be the antithesis of the fantasy that came before. However, Moorcock is not being contrary in Gloriana, which in most regards, reads like an abridged Elizabethan take on Peake's Gormenghast books (which, incidentally, are the origin of Crisp's quotation, by way of his introduction). Gloriana is considered by highfalutin Moorcock fans to be perhaps his most remarkable and original work. It is certainly in no way genre Fantasy, and though the characters may not be easy to empathize with, you certainly won't be stuck resenting them for flimsily facaded archetypes. Though they are not based upon those same silly cliches, they are still immediately as one-dimensional and unchanging. The book is really nothing so much as an eroticized rewrite of Peake, but Moorcock does not have the capacious wit necessary to evoke Peake. It is more of a fond imitation than a reimagining. That being said, it takes a skilled writer to draw any comparison to Peake, even when that's precisely what they are trying to do. The book will also teach you the word 'seraglio'; a one which I hope to have more and more a need to use in the future, hopefully in the same sentence as 'odalisque'. My Fantasy Book Suggestions

Annie Dillard created breathing room during a low spot in my life, converted me to the art of the personal essay, and continues to inspire me to really look at the world around me. She makes me want to be a giant frog-sucking waterbug, just so she can have the pleasure of watching me do my thing.

Humorous, honest, and harsh childhood of the author. Born in New York, grows up in Ireland. Doesn't call out the hypocrisy of the church and the greediness of the "haves" but while reading it, you'll wonder how could the church and neighbors with plenty to share refuse to? Clearly shows how the goodness and purity of a child can be spoiled by the world. Because at times it's too honest - being a young man learning about sex - I give it 4 stars rather than 5 because only male readers would appreciate that much. There is a sequel to his life story called 'Tis. :) I will look for it!

This book is amazing - Jane Austen knows the heart of every woman, as well as the ins and outs of relationships!! Truly incredible, and always a laugh. Sometimes I actually began laughing outloud!! Now how many times does that happen while reading?

I won this on goodreads - I believe it will go in my camera bag, since it is a "field guide". Really excited for a reference guide, though. I got this in the mail today and read most of it - it's divided into two sections "The Digital Environment" and "Image Editing". Since I didn't have my camera out I scanned the editing portion, as that will be more useful the more I practice shooting. I can't believe how much I learned just in 60 minutes, though. I've had a goal of starting to get more serious about photography - rather than just being a mom with a DSLR who took one class in college understands how to shoot in manual. I'd like to practice enough that I could actually be GOOD at it. That of course will take practice, and I think throwing this little book (literally 6x4 inches) in the camera bag would help. I'm actually interested in more landscape/macro photography than people - and this little book could help me get on my way. I probably learned more about how a camera works in the first 20 pages than my last 5 years of workshops and online classes I've taken. The sensor, image processor, dynamic range, creating HDR images, etc. I like how explanations are given for PC and mac. Cool. Useful little book. Thanks!

a fantastic book - made me feel i could discover so much about myself and the world around me by simply getting ´lost´ (wandering!), not only in his wonderful prose and depiction of nature, but in his constant search to find meaning in everything... A MUST READ!

Daughter of Smoke and Bone is a contender for my favorite book read in 2011 (although it faces stiff competition from The Near Witch). Laini Taylor knows how to make you fall in love with a setting. I wanted to jump through the pages and travel to Prague, slip through one (or a few) of Brimstone's portals and peek at Eretz. And the romance! No easy fall in love and all is right with the world relationship here, but it was real and hard and worth fighting for, which made it believable and riveting to read. A more coherent (and complete) review to come.
