Ignatius J. Rieley, one of the most selfish, disgusting characters in literature, tries to find work to pay for his mother’s legal troubles and winds up ruining a lot of lives. Funny, repulsive, difficult to listen to at times and great.

Read The Butcher's Wife for my Chinese women writer's class - slightly shocking but once I started it I finished it in one sitting. Haven't read the other short stories in the collection yet, but I plan to. And it was based on a true story....

Sowell addresses the economic issues being discussed today, e.g., health care, immigration, discrimination, housing and more. He points out that political discussions of economic issues is very different from an economic discussion of economic issues. Political debate is about rhetoric and short-term results, whereas the long-term consequences of political economic decisions are rarely addressed. This is a powerful exposition of how to think beyond "stage one", i.e., until the next election. Highly recommended. Also see Sowell's execellent Basic Economics, also written for the general reader.

Thorough and encyclopedic coverage of the Shih-wang ching and every kind of context you'd be curious about. Huzzah for mountains of appendices and footnotes... seems like this will be useful to get a feel for the terrain - what people have said about particular topics, and which areas are still terra incognita....
