I actually read the CD version but again, wonderful narrator and fabulous story!
perhaps at the same time one of the most tedious and most fascinating books i've read. thucydides relates the history of the war between athens and sparta from 431-404BC. his meticulous attention to detail, tracing every development each year can drive you nuts, but his analysis is brilliant and his writing elegant. in particular, the speeches given by generals and politicians are rhetorical feasts. themes are the expansion of empire, the roles of justice and interest in politics, human nature, and the completely contradictory characters of the two cities, athens and sparta. pericles' funeral oration is transcendant.

It was really YA. There wasn't any amazing writing, but I thought the characters were good and it did make me think a lot. Easy quick read.

One of my all-time favorite books. I am such a huge Walker Percy fan, and this is one of his best.

Tiffany Aching is apprenticed to Miss Treason, a wicked old witch indeed. She is trying her best to learn how to be a witch and how to be a woman. In a moment of thoughtless clarity, she inserts herself into a dance and comes to the attention of the Wintersmith. The heartless will yearn, the divine will slumber, and Tiffany will grow up as a result. This is probably my favorite of the Tiffany Aching books. Tiffany's interaction with the Wintersmith and her fellow witches, the unfairness of her predicament, her determination to do the right thing, in the midst of her own troubles, make the novel tight and Tiffany herself admirable. Pratchett's notions of right and wrong, idealistic and pragmatic, provide the moral background for the witches and their application thereof is both compassionate and frightening. Wheels within wheels aptly describes Mr. Pratchett's work and that is doubly the case with this novel.
