Very interesting read. Sad ending. Not so sure if I would want to see the movie version.

The vivid and bright layering colors of Eric Carle's illustrations will once again not fail to gain the attention of the children. Learning sequencing with younger students is a perfect area to use "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?". Because the wording is so simple and repetitive it is easier for students to remember the sequencing order since there are not a lot of fine details in between. The rhyming of 'me' and 'see' is a good way to introduce rhyming. This book is also available in a board book which is wonderful for the younger reader!

This book completely took me away into another world. It was great, and I couldn't put it down. The story itself is fantastic. It reads likes a fantasy, but embedded in real-life details. In an interesting but incongruous move, Martel adds in issues of truth and fiction at the end, which bring the whole book into perspective.

An examination of modern geek culture from the mid-90's that has not aged well. Still interesting because it references so many geek cultural touchstones.

What a wonderful book! You might think that reading a book about talking rats is baby stuff--but these rats talk for a reason. This is an entertaining children's book with plenty of adventure and heart. By the way, I am guessing that NIMH stands for National Institute of Mental Health. Just sayin'.

I have been reading Edith Wharton's The House of Mirth at the same time as Tom Jones, and I find that comparing the two illuminates the special characteristics of a classic as opposed to an ordinarily good novel. Both effectively satirize aspects of society with which the author is familiar and convincingly recreate that society with believable characters one comes to care about. Fielding, however, possesses a heartfelt vision of what life is and should be, that insinuates itself in every sentence. Wharton certainly exhibits a certain sense of what's wrong with her characters' lives and how they could improve, but that sense of life is not dramatized. It must be deduced through an intellectual process. The sense of life imbuing Tom Jones, however, veritably accosts one, like a large, red-faced drinking companion slapping one's back or giving a bear hug. Surely, that it one hallmark of a classic; it surrounds you insistently with the largess of the author's belief about life's meaning.

Wendy Wasserstein knows what's up. Highly recommended for any smart, ambitious lady anywhere. Great parts for women, especially the mouthy Jewish kind of woman.

A better than usual collection and especially interpretation of psychology studies which speak to how people try to invest their money, why and how they screw themselves, and what one may do about that...with lots of time and interest in improving oneself. Bottom line, if you want money money money, you're already in trouble, but if you're willing to be successful as an incidental result of a relentless study to improve your own wrong thinking and unhelpful feelings, then there may be hope.
