This book was unpredictable and beautiful and brilliant but oh, so painful. So ridiculously incredibly terribly and beautifully heartbreaking. I cried reading it. It was amazing. It's unlike anything I've ever read. A story that has never been told, especially not in that manner. Jay Asher is gifted and despite the pain this book caused me, I really am grateful to him for writing it. It needed to be written. This is the kind of story that was almost literally BEGGING to be written--and it couldn't have been done better.

Good perspectives on life. A must read for anyone who ever questions life.

Very different, painfully realistic story about an ordinary woman's life experience. Strange at times, and somewhat depressing.

There is something about Baldacci that bothers me, too much detail. The story was good and the build-up well done, but I do not need to know all there is to know about a bullet and the gun that shoots it. You put a bullet into the gun, point the gun and pull the trigger. That's about it for me, but as said, it was still a good read.

Paul Farmer is an inspiration, giving of his energy so selflessly to improve global health and promote the belief that every life is equally precious. I only wish that the book were written in a manner that flowed more coherently. Kidder's frequent self-insertions into the narrative become somewhat irritating, and he jumps around quite a bit.

I found this book particularly interesting after reading "Everybody Was So Young: Gerald and Sara Murphy: A Lost Generation Love Story", since Fitzgerald had based his characters on Sara and Gerald.

I am puzzled by these stories. Really puzzled. The copyright of this book is 1977; Pearl died in 1973 so that means that someone dug these stories out of some dark corner of a long-forgotten drawer and published them. All but one of this collection of seven stories have never been published before and I think I can see why. They were published by the Pearl S. Buck Foundation which means that quite probably Pearl’s young friend Ted Harris had a hand in digging these pieces out of obscurity where they were probably meant to stay. This writing is not even close to the quality of her best-known novels. The stories are all love stories, stories about woman/man relationships, and they are extremely simplistic by today’s standards...almost as if they had been written for fast consumption in a common women’s magazine of the 40s or 50s. In nearly all of them, there is a very fragile man’s ego and a strong woman who has to curb herself and deny expression of her strengths and intellect so she does not upstage the man. The women face the question of how to be all that they can be intellectually and career-wise and still be able to keep a man happy. The characters are not well developed and they are not consistent. My guess is that these stories were written very early in Pearl’s career...I would not be surprised to find that they had been written when she was in college or soon after. Even though I don’t think she ever intended these stories for publication, there is perhaps something to be gleaned in understanding the struggles of Pearl Buck in her personal love relationships. Obviously she was the inquisitive, intelligent, and thinking female who always had a difficult time finding a man who could match the needs of her mind as well as her physical needs of husband, home and hearth. No one man was ever able to do that for her. These stories illustrate her struggle.

I love John Grisham, and this is one of his masterpieces. It's not remarkable literature, but it will take you for a ride. Grisham always grabs me immediately, and I end up finishing his books in days.

Pellagia made me read this book as homework for our trip to Zimbabwe -- I think she thought it would help me to understand a bit more not only where she came from, but also who she was in the context of stradling two worlds. It turned out to be a great read.

The Lymond Chronicles books are quite possibly my all-time favorite books, or at least as an adult. There are six thoroughly-researched novels in the series, and each outdoes its predecessor in weaving historic details, compelling characters, and gripping plot twists. The story follow Francis Crawford of Lymond, a minor Scottish nobleman, through adventures that take him from his native land to England, France, Malta, Greece, North Africa, Russia, and finally back home to Scotland. Along the way, he tangles with epic figures, both real and fictitious while confronting the darker side of both his own and his family's history. One warning: the first two books of the series are a bit slow in comparison to the remaining four, but it is definitely worth the time to get through them. I also recommend getting a copy of Elspeth Morrison's The Dorothy Dunnett Companion, which annotates the myriad historic and literary references that are woven throughout the books.

This is a good series, but I wasn't crazy about the art.
