Not the best of Coupland's books (Gen X or Life After God) but still an amusing tale of working for Microsoft in the early Nineties. He captures the milieu well and although it seems quaint reading it in 2011, those of us who lived through this pre-Internet Bubble time will recognize the trappings of those days. Although Coupland keeps his perspective removed, he clearly has some affection for the nerd-set and his writing always has a romantic preciousness that only works because it is paired with his use of cynicism for positive change. Off to read the semi-sequel "J-Pod" soon.

I have loved this particular book since I was about 7. I can remember exactly when I found it. Second grade, Mrs Russell's class and it was time for our library hour. Before we could look for books, we had to do computer math problems. Addition, I believe. Then it was finally time for books. I walked to the far-left lower shelf, headed toward the window, pulling out random covers. This was one random cover and, while I have never really been a sucker for sparkles before, I kept it and brought it home. It's illustrations left me dazzled and I have forever been trying to find it again.

A little Bridget Jone's-ish, but so far, not as funny.

I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop. I enjoy her style of writing about romance. This was a more chilling ending but thoroughly enjoyable.

I heart Manson. Very funny and amusing to read. I especially liked his takes on shoplifting and gayness.

wildly inventive and a unqiue product of stalinism. the mirra ginsburg translation is the one you want.

** spoiler alert ** Trying to describe the plot of this book I realized how absurd the whole thing is. Dane's a space technician deeply in touch with both his heart and his barbarian roots. Aiyana is over 400 years old, a clueless virgin, and just about the ditsiest thing ever. There's a talking bat, evil clones, elves, space battles, backwoods necking, shape shifters, terriorists, secret pasts and almost secret babies. Not terribly satisfying, but rather entertaining all things considered.

It was a beautiful book. The first time I picked it up, I don't think I was in the right mindset. So I shelved it for a good year and was encouraged by others reading it, too. You don't want the story to end. Read it!

I just couldn't get through this book. The story just felt too neat and tidy, especially when the early conflicts seemed to resolve too conveniently. It all got rather tedious, and I just didn't feel that interested in the story or the characters, so I quit.

I've read them all up to S...or T...I've lost track, it's been a while. Overall, entertaining reads. The first few were a little too easy to figure out, but Grafton got better over time. It's Kinsey that kept me going back for more, she's a well written character. My only beef with the series staying in the 80's is that it seems a little too convenient - and easier - to write a mystery without such inconvenient things as cell phones and computers.
