Reading a novel after having already seen the movie is almost never a good idea; too much imagery has already been implanted in your brain, you know the story already, all the fun of imagination and expectation and surprise is gone. So I thought... There's not much missing from the movie, it turns out (they did a really good job), but the bits that are (family/regional history etc) are the best bits of the book and in themselves make it worth the read for the added depth (and depth of moody horror). And Woodrell's language! His discriptions, especially owing to his creative use of invented or re-functioned words (which aren't jarring at all, incidentally--you get the feeling with each one: shit, there just isn't any other way to put it, that's exactly what it is), are a joy to read, even when what he's describing isn't.

After seeing a few of my friends from school talk about "Life As We Knew It", I knew I had to review it and give it a well-deserved 5/5 stars. The story is about sixteen year old Miranda who is in the midst of living life as a teenager, with a brother who is attending an out of state college, and another younger brother who loves baseball. She currently lives with her mom (her dad divorced and re-married). Suddenly, astronomers predicted that a meteor would hit the moon. Now they only predicted it would hit it, but it did much more than that. The moon was knocked completely off balance, and right away thousands of people died that same night. Flash floods, earthquakes, you name it. A sudden death apocalypse occurs, and through Miranda's journal you experience the hardship and suffering that she and her family must make it through to survive. After re-reading this book a while ago, I can still remember that it was one of the best sci-fi books I've ever read. It had elements of romance and adventure, not just sci-fi. There were moments where the family's hardship literally brought me to tears, and sometimes I just sat back and wondered what I would've done if I was put in their situation. If for some reason you haven't picked up a copy of this novel, you have to give it a try. You'll love it.

Flora Poste is one of my favorite heroines of all time; she's bossy, meddlesome, and snobbish. She throws her distant relatives into confusion with her arrival on their D.H. Lawrence-lite farm, upsetting the miserable rut they all are in. It's a quick read and very funny.

Wow... this book has been on my 'to read' list for far, far too long and I finally sat down to read it and read it entirely in almost one sitting. It was a difficult story, a sad hearbreaking story, but an important one to hear. I was pulled into the lives of these women right from the start and I had to keep reading to find out what happened and how things worked out. I was not disappointed! Don't expect fairytale happy endings... just the hard realistic truth. I imagine this could have been the story of hundreds of similar women in similar circumstances. I would highly recommend reading this book to all.

Kingsolver is an amazing storyteller. Her characters are well crafted, and her plots draw you in. You can't put down her books.

A nice epic fantasy series. As usual for this genre, the first book is the best, and the quality wanes slowly over the course of the series. But the initial few are very good reads with lots of interesting ideas mixed in with the classic fantasy archetypes. (And they'll get you intrigued enough in the world that you'll probably want to read the last few as well, even though they're not as good). The main characters can be grating and annoying at times but the support cast is full of lively and memorable characters, and the world is very well developed. If you're new to epic fantasy, this is probably not the best series to start with. But if you're a fan of the genre, and haven't yet read the work of Forsyth, you're in for a treat.

This is an absolute classic that should be read by every student of Kabbalah. However, it should be read after studying Scholem's Major Trends in Jewish Mysticism. Idel's book is predicated on Scholem's. The main benefit in Idel's work is that he studies the experiential dimension of Kabbalah too. He is very interested in the actual practices that kabbalists used, not just their doctrines and myths and their history, which seemed to be the most interesting aspects to Scholem.

If you ever want to call your child stubborn or difficult I recommend this book. This book really helped me identify why my daughter did certain things. For example, when she was younger she would get really upset if we were at the park and then on the way home I told her we were going to make a quick stop at the grocery store. This book helped me understand that by explaining things ahead of time (what we are doing that day, what I expect of her, etc.) it can really help her shift gears. Outings and errands became so much better - and enjoyable! This is just one example of many about how this book really gave me insights into my daughter. I can see how a different parent may have labeled her stubborn, emotional, etc. but I knew that didn't feel right for me. How great to find a book that shows what I know to be true - she is a beautiful, vibrant, focused, strong, fantastic person.
Global Time Line by David W. Newell is a book about a future civilization where time travel is possible. The main character Andrew is one of the authorized time explorers and while on vacation he encounters an old man who is apparently living in the wild and being pursued by the government. Andrew feels intrigued to find out why the government is pursuing this man and enlists the aid of his childhood friend Susan who is a VP in Global Time Lines where Andrew works. Together they uncover a conspiracy to cover up religion and a few ways the government is using to exert control. I don't normally like time travel books because generally they get too confusing and there is too much explaining of the science behind theoritical time travel but this book skimmed over that and there weren't crazy time paradoxes or anything. The author did make time travel plausible but without over explaining it. The story was pretty intriguing and different. I just wish the characters and dialogue were more complex. It was like the book was more of a draft that needed some fleshing out. Parts were a little cheesy. Overall it was an entertaining read due to the storyline. I received this book for free through GoodReads First Reads.
A good overview of occultism in America. It does show the pervasiveness of the new thought movement in American life. A pervasiveness that in think has become detrimental.
