Nate Pritts clearly understands and is able to communicate the miracle of metamorphosis/transfiguration in his eloquent melancholic 'sonnets for the fall'. Over the course of fourteen poems Pritts invites us to witness or experience the changes of the seasons of nature - in these works that season is autumn. Autumn/Fall is a time of momentary natural spectacle as the chilling nights transform the green leaves of spring's birth and summer's shading into the brilliant colors of red and gold and orange and yellow - and eventually brown as the autumnal costume is slowly dropped to the ground, leaving the patron tree bare and skeletal. Nate Pritts becomes that tree, witnessing the changes of seasonal destiny, and in doing so he allows the reader to enter the mystery of nature. Only in the last of the fourteen poems does he step out of the transmutation and speak as the poet/man of his experience: 'I want this to be the first time the now the here I'm lost to myself breathing these last fall leaves I'm making up my self an already dark sky me again a piece lost the stale sunlight the harsh outside I'm not a tree & the now that is going an already dark sky & the whole world brand new again' Pritts explains that each of these sonnets was created by the collage process, cutting lines from previously written works and reconfiguring them into quasi random pieces of fleeting thoughts on one subject. But whatever the explanation of the process Nate Pritts makes, interesting though such sharing may be, the result if a work of enormous beauty. Crowning this 'sonnets for the fall' is a beautiful cover painting by Rhonda Gleason-Pritts, a painting that breathes yet more life into this very fine collection. Grady Harp

A few years ago I would have said Stan Lee could not come up with a good idea any longer. His work with Boom! Studios and the writers who have teams up with him have me rethinking that. Here Lee's concept and the execution of same by fantasy and science fiction author Chris Roberson really works. The rating is probably a little high, but Roberson hits a lot of my space opera fanboy buttons. And, it is hard to resist a tale when an aspiring science fiction writer discovers he is the heir to an interstellar empire. We have different alien species, and a lingering question. Are the humans the good guys?
I like the FBI series by Catherine Coulter. I do not like her romance series and wont read them, but this FBI series is better. This one is the one that introduces her main characters, Dillon Savich and Lacey Sherlock whom the series follows. But its her novels, "Point Blank" and "Double Take" that I like best. It follows the story of Sheriff Dix Noble and agent Ruth Warnecki (peers of Savich and Sherlock).

Fascinating! Wonderful portrayal of what life might really have been like for most of the people in Europe in the 14th century. Told from the point of view of an innocent, 13 year old bastard son of a great lord in Edward's England. The type of book that makes me want to find out more about that time period. Easy to see why it won the Newbery!
Liked the book but is unfortunately somewhat ruined for me by being the universal hipster book-of-choice. The Beat generation was undeniably an interesting one however and the autobiographical qualities of this novel were fascinating.

I've run out of time and must return it to the library. The dialect of the narration is difficult for me, too dry... stilted? But the story itself is intriguing. Well, actually, part of me suspects the story may be boring in the end, but the way it is being told is intriguing me. I have to confess though, I am skipping some paragraphs after the lead sentence, and only coming back when I think I missed something key to the story line. Actually, I've skipped about every other page so far....

At first I didn't think a book about British boarding school kids could be that interesting, but as the real story was revealed it became a lot more engaging. The whole situation is pretty bizarre, but the topics that are explored (sex, organ harvesting, etc) can be compared to how the real world treats them, and there are some strange apparent parallels in attitudes towards these topics.
