The Newbery winners sure were different when they first started awarding them. This was a cute book. Kind of made me wish for simpler times!

** spoiler alert ** This manga was much more enjoyable than I expected after just reading the summary. It was hilarious! The story was a little slow getting going, but I loved the whole idea of how, after all her romantic dreams are shattered, Kyoko doesn't feel sorry for herself - she just immediately snaps to REVENGE! The illustrations of Kyoko's "emotions" and the hand coming out of her throat were also quite funny. I only wish that there was more to read in one volume!!

One of the best books I've ever read. Challenged my views in so many ways and became so involved with all three characters!

I read this most of this book on a six hour bus ride from St. Louis to Chicago. I hadn't planned on spending so much of the ride reading, but the first half of this book is filled with so many questions that I just couldn't stop reading until I could get a grasp on what was happening in the book. I'm going to copy a format I've seen in other reviews on this website and list the good and the bad. The Good: As everyone else is saying, the photographs. I'm usually much more of a words person than an image person, but damn, these photographs. They're creepy and fascinating and very much vital to this book. Even if I didn't want to read this book, I would want to flip through these pictures in the bookstore. Besides the photographs themselves, I found it impressive how the author was able to mold a story around the pictures. Everything fit together really well, and sometimes I had to go look back at previous pictures to understand what was going on. (view spoiler) The tone of the book was pretty scary, for me. Mind you, I get scared really easily by books. I was pretty freaked out reading this at night. The Bad: Part of the reason the photos are so vital to the book is that the writing probably wouldn't be able to stand up by itself. The creepy tone was dramatically enhanced by the photos, as was the plot. The writing itself was fine, but nothing special. (view spoiler)

I'm not sure exactly how I feel about the second installment of the Theatre Illuminata series. I very much enjoy Bertie, and the fairies, Nate, and even Ariel, but in reading this I felt so lost. The book seemed to be a little all over the place, so I was glad that the thread of finding Nate was there in the center. There were fun parts, and I'm looking foward to picking up the third installment, and seeing what happens with the Sea Goddess and the Bird Man (especially the outcome of Bertie's parents).

This was my first Irving and I loved it. Irving really captures what it means to be family in this one. I laughed super hard and cried just as much.

I wanted to like this book more than I did, but I just couldn't connect with the author or her grief. Joan Didion seemed stiff, unreachable, unlikable and I could not relate with her story at all. This book just didn't agree with my emotions.

Without this aristocratic, rich, and vain man, we would be wearing SS uniforms and seiging heil. War is not a game, not fun.....and when it is necessary, you want a Rommel or a Patton up front. There are sentiments in this book that will curl your blood. But we must understand this man, in order to understand war.
